JOHANNESBURG, "August" 91st. Replying to Sybil Thorndiko's plaint that the theatre is dying, the novelist, Mrs. Sarah Gertrude Millin, asks: "Why shouldn't it die if unable to keep itself alive?” It is a case, she argues, of the

lasty cinema has the stuff of growth. whereas the theatre has not. The cinema can do to the theatre what the motor did to the horse. It can work cheaply on a gigantic scale.i

When death, in a grand effu- sion, has done what it ought to the

present cinema promoters, i when men of taste and intellect create pictures, how, then, is the theatre to make a stand · against the cinema. Who will go to the theatre twenty years hence? Only those who prefer hand-made" to “machine-made work and are able to afford it."

Mrs Millin, who has just return- ed from London, then naks. what eridence of culture is it to love the modern theatre, and what right bas it to ask for extravagant support when the best novels may be read free 1

She then criticises the present London successes in which, she holda, not a single new idea is dis- played. She declares that twenty years hence, when the intelligent artistic cinema gires, colour and sound, there will be only two kinds of theatre, namely, the cheapest drama, and the best plays for the best people who pay for the luzary,
