PHILIPPINES SUGAR CONVENTION:

MR. QUEZON OPPOSES TIM-

BERLAKE RESOLUTIONS..

GOVERNOR GENERAL TAKES: SAME LINE

MANILA, Sept. 20th. Branding the Timberlake Resolu- tion as "the most serious menace to the economic development of the Philippines outside of the inde finite political status," Senate President Quezon spoke for one hour on the dangers to the sugar Industry before a crowd of about 400 sugar men and business lenders at the Manila Hotel.

Mr. Quezon was the guest of the Philippine Sugar Association in its sixth annual convention.

The menace is not limited to the sugar industry but strikes at the roots of Philippine prosperity, the senate leader told his bearers Bo- cause of the general nature of the menace, the producers of the coun- try, sugar men, copra men, abaca planters, rice growers and other should combine to defeat the Tim berlake plan, he urged.

The malvation of the sugar indus try--and more remotely of all other Philippine industries said the senate lender, depends in the last and most vital analysis on the

American consumer.

Mr. Quezon would have the sugar leaders tell the American consumer f sugar that the Timberlake Re solution if adopted would ultimate ly raise the price of his sugar, and that soon he may have to take his coffee without it!

Mr. Quezon told his hearers that while in the United States last, he had the opportunity to discuss with leading members in Congress the Timberlake move. During these discussions, two suggestions were made by proponents of the limitation, to wit:

1. That the limitation be placed at 1,000,000 tons, instead of the 500,000 tons fixed by Timberlake,

That an agreement be drawn up whereby the Philippine sugar men pledge not to produce more than is at present warranted by the capacity of the mills in opera tion.

Mr. Quezon said he opposed both. proposals for the following rea

He urged his hearer to appeal to the sense of justice of those Ameri cans. "Their idealism," said Mr. Quezon, "is such that they are capable of making sacrifices in keeping that idealism unsullied."

In conclusion, the senate presi- dent pledged to do all he can to carry on the fight for the sugar men and the other Philippine in- dustries.
