LONDON, Sept. 1st. We have been introduced this week at the Garrick Theatre to The Moving Finger," a drama of revenge, in which the leading character is an elderly Chinese, Li Hung, whose amarried daughter had been made mother by an Englishman some thirty years be fore the play opens. The Chinese had killed the girl on discovering her disgrace, and in all the inter- vening years he had lived and schemed to take his revenge on' the wicked Englishman.
&
The story is elaborately worked out. There is very good acting and many Chinese servants, and the stage setting suggests some thing of the Orient, although the scenes are laid in Li Hung's house
in London. The old man's
Becre-
tary is Bonnie Waterhouse, and in the last act we have the Eng lishman, now stately personage knowB 31 Sir John Frampton, under arrent for shooting the secre tary. Li Hung, satialed that his revenge is complete, ends his life with a dagger, and thus ends the play.
more than two and a half time as fast as that of England. The figure for Palestine quoted above is for 1925. It has since risen fur- ther; births zone to 534 per 10,000 in 1926, though they dropped to 504 in 1927.
Moslems are chiefly responsible for this record, the birth-rate mong them last year being 581 for every 10,000, followed by Christians with 358 ́and Jews with 351. Polygamy does not account for the large number of Moslem births, since the practice is confined to a relative handful of the wealthier classes: the fellakin and town labourers are to all intents and purposes monogamous, N

One hears strange stories of trainers who "doctor" dogs by clever and ingenious maans-put ting vaseline in their eyes, rubber bande between their toes, giving the dogs a big meal just before s race, and so forth. Those closely associated with greyhound racing stoutly deny that anything illegal BRITISH IMMIGRATION IN is done, but the public, have an uneasy auspicion of things being "on the cross," as the saying is. Suspicion is strengthened by the disclosures with regard to what has happened at Staines and Bel- {fast.
