A REVIEW OF THE COMING FASHIONS.

Dress designs were never more thoughtful or better carried out than they ate this season, the models of hats, frocks and wraps show coherence, balance, and perfec- tion of line.

Among the colours for the coming senson Black plays an important part, green in several new shades, warm browns and true scarlet are also important.

Materials are above all pliable even though a good many tinsel threads, and in some cases horse hair, are introduced. For the even ing paune satin and cretonne lamé new and likely to be very fashionable.

hos Sports Wear developed in riot of colour, and promises to sweep all before it this perhaps for that very reason more season, is the beret. Berets are fortaal gowns tend to be in mono-jaunty and yet smart and the chrome and the tailored effect, supreme importance of line is not though more feminine than before, is still very appårent.

Madame la Mode had had Hong It would really appear as though Kong and our special needs in view, for he has created gowns which are precisely what we need for the season and yet which could not often be worn at Home. There are, for example, a number of afternoon gowns of heavy silk lace most per fectly tailored, which are neither too diaphanous for smart afternoon wear in the autumn season"por too het for the climate.

.. THE NEW BERET.

The new beret is one of the season's most charming millinery ideas. It offers scope for plenty of variety of cut, material and made of wearing and suits nearly everyone. The model on the Left is of black panne and white glove kid very finely embroidered with jet. On the right is a jaunty little model of copper metal lamé and copper panne, while the third hat is made of grey shaved lamb bound with a black ciré rýhan.

The patterns on printed designs are usually small whatever the material.

Skirt lengths tend to be longer, but this effect is mostly gained by uneven lengths, the waistline is as you like it. Godets and bias frills are taking the place of pleating thus getting more Buidity and movement in the line of the gowns The peacock outline is coming ia for evening gowia

All tones of blonde lace are fashionable now and very gen- erally becoming to women of all ages. A very nice balance has been arrived at between georgeous ness, which is only permissable in the evening, and the rather severe by tailored look which is becom- ing only to those who dare, for example, wear an Eton crop.

Let me illustrate. There is a dress of maize coloured silk lace, which has the new wing panel back, and is girdled with a suede belt with a topaz-set buckle. The lace is arranged so that the border follows a diagonal line acros the front of the bodice, and is left loose to give a slightly bloused The interest of the one sided effect at the waist. Another blonde effect is very marked but one sided-silk law frock is made as an open ncas is always backed by a reason,

Cuffs on conts are very fanciful and make lavish use of fur; collars, on the other hand, are smaller.

those of the sweater variety, are often worn under instead of over the skirt and are left to blouse over the some what loosely fitting skirt yoke. This may portend a revival of the blouse proper.'' ''''

Velvet and felt is the newest millinery alliance. Either material may be used to trim the other or both may share the burden equally. Many felts are trimmed with a braiding of chenille, and decorative stitchery of every sort is a very important millinery note.

Among the new hat I saw yester- day is a beaver brown velvet with two stitched felt feathers

" which spring from the back and cross in front giving a becoming width at the sides. The new chocolate brown is used for the soft velvet brim, and appliqué design on the front of the crown of a beige felt model. This colour scheme is re- versed in a chocolate brown felt which has a soft swathing of beige velvet.

Grosgrain ribbon is also allied to either felt or chenille. One model in putty coloured grosgrain is braided all over with chenille, and another green felt is cut up the front to display a "feather" OF folded grosgrain ribbon. A very smart sports hat has been carried out in beige felt which has a faint plaid in a deeper tone. The lines of the plaid have been stitched over with red silk and the effect is both chic and workmanlike.

Many hats of the close fitting Variety have a longer section on one side, rather like the check feathers of last year but made all in one with the hat. One such model is composed of three different tones of wine red velvet joined in "moder- histic" lines.

GODETS.

IMPORTANCE OF MOVE- MENT" IN THE NEW STYLES.

Godets are immensely important in the 1928-1929 styles.

There are godets in all materials, even thick Scotch woollens.

You notice I mention "even Scotch woollens," with regard to thickness. That is because they are one of the firmest fabrics being

dat the moment. Velvets, includ ing the printed patterns, are all deliciously soft and supple because or other they are of the "ring fine variety.

Godets in lace gowns, especially fine lace, might have been expected to provide a problem for the dress makers because of the godet falling in, thus giving a limp appearance and hiding the beauty of the late

I noticed, too, some very smart Godels Pisated Like A Fan.
