[THOM OUR OWN 'CORRISPONDENT.]

LONDON, August 25th. The newspapers in general are somewhat critical in their references to the career of Lord Haldane who has died suddenly a few days after celebrating his 2nd birthday. But when all is said, it must be ad- mitted that he filled a considerable place in the political and intel. lectual life of his time. He will

the ereator of the Territorial Army. He also developed the Expedi tionary Force, the Old Con- temptibles" of the Great War, and he reorganised the General Staff during the time he was Secretary of State for War, 1905-12. This is something of a record apart from bis work as Lord Chancellor, and as one of the great forces for the improvement of our educational methods.

And yet, as success is, reckoned in the opinion of the world. Lord Haldane was a comparative failure. He never made a popular figure in public life. I think it is not too mrth to say that his influence was endered negligible by a phrase that be used on one occasion. Referring to Germany be said he regarded that country his spiritual home," and it was never forgotten. What he meant was that be had a great admiration for German philosophy and thorough- ness; but in the public mind Lord Haldane became identified with friendship for the Germans. Dar- ing the war he was nerer permitted to forget it, though the unfortunate phrase was used long before the war broke out.

She owned that she ought not to have boxed Fran Aussem's ears publicly on the tennis court at Hamburg, and she did not com- plain that the German Tennis Union has marked its disapproval of her action by suspending her for "I had to box her ears six weeks somewhere," she said, "and really I could not be expected to follow her round Germany just for that."

She told me what was the charge that Frau Ausseca had brought against her in a letter to the Ger man Tennis Union, and I felt no longer any surprise that she had deliberately boxed her ears She remarked with evident satisfaction that the Tennielish at Cologne had permanently, rekidno je po and continued
