Inspector Clark, prosecuting, stated that the knife was similar to those used in recent robberies. It was a butcher's knife.

CHIEF JUSTICE SEES THEM FOR FIRST TIME,

CONGRATULATIONS TO

POLICE AND COM...

MUNITY,

There were no casce for trial at this month's Criminat Sessions and in honour of this unusual event a pair of white gloves was presented to the Chief Justice (Sir Henry Gollan, C.B.E.) by Mr. C. D.. Melbourne, the Deputy Registrar. "It will bo remembered that it was possible to make a similar gift to Mr. Justies J. R. Wood last March, but such an event, as the Chief Justice pointed out," is extremely rare in the Colony.

among those present.

Addressing the Judge Mr. C. D. Melbourne said:-My Lord, There are no cases this Sessions and I beg Your Lordship's acceptance of pair of white gloves in accord- ance with the old established custom.

Sir Henry Gollan replied:-Mr. Fitzroy, Mr. Registrar,-During the last 23 years I have been engaged in the administration of Chief Justice, in five different de the law, as Attorney-General or

But the fact remains that two occasions within the last six months there have been no cases for trial at the Sessions and I think it is a matter of congratulation both for the community to be able to lead such virtuous lives, and for our police force, our very efficient police force.

There is one other matter to which I should like to call atten- tion, and that is a statement which I have seen in to-day's papers, that

Defendanta deni- ed the charge.

Inspector Marks gave an outline of the fight which took place on the King's Park ground, and which" was reported in the Daily Press yesterday. He said that when the police arrived on the scene the three defendants were found to be carrying stones and another man had a bamboo pole. There was, however, no evidence that they took part in the Eght.

His Worship intimated that the section under which the charge was brought made a person who had in his possession a spear, bludgeon, or other offensive weapon liable to a fine.

Inspector Marks remarked that a stone (which he produced) could not be called a bludgeon, but it

could do a lot of damage.
