POOL QUESTIONS.
LONDON, August 91st. Backing boraca by the pari-mutuel system introduced by the Guardian Pari-Hutuel, Ltd.;a company of which Lord Westbury is chairman, had had almost a week's trial with the close of racing at Windsor, says the Daily Mail.
The directors of the company state that they are quite satisfied with the results so far and are
hopeful of the future, but book- makers claim that the system has proved a complete failure.
The situation is piquant. There is, for instance, the case of Wel come Gift, winner of the first race at Windsor on Friday. The start- ing price of this horse was 5 to 4 against. The pari-mutuel returned the price at 12 to 1 c. Thus with the pari-mutuel a backer had to invest 30s. to win 2s. 6d.
Since the first pari-mutuel pool on Wednesday there have been four instances-three of them occurred on Saturday-ip which the pari mutuel declared all bets void either. Fecause no one backed any horse but the winner or because the winner was not backed at ali.
One bookmaker has informed the Daily Mail that he was, instru- mental in placing an investment of £25 with the pari-mutuel on- Welcome Gift, and the fact that this sum made, the odds so ridiculous is used to illustrate the small amount of the pool.
The Pool.
On the first day a board was dis played outside the company's offices in New Bridge Street, E.C., giving the amount of money invested on the first two races at Kempton Park. The figures were
1ST RACE:- invested to win;
£33 for places.. 2ND RACE-E1D invested to win;
£13 for places.
Then a police officer intervened because a crowd collected in front of the board, and since then the total pool has not been disclosed, although boards showing win and place betting are displayed five. minutes before each race in a room to which the public has necess,
The foregoing are some of the reasons why credit bookmakers are predicting a speedy end to the operations of this particular com- paay.
Mr... W. J. Randall, one of the
managing directors of Guardian Pari-Mutuel, Ltd., said to a Daily Ja ieporter:

PARIS." Demands that a stricter watch- should he kept on the Baie de Boulogne, the Hyde Park of Paris, and that only officials whose inte: grity is beyond question should be in, charge of the park police are pouring in to the authorities as a | result of recent incidents there,
The Bois is much larger than Hyde Park, and is situated in the fashionable west-end, gaster of Paris. It is in reality on the out ekirts of the city, but it can be reached in a quarter of an hour by taxicab from the Opéra. It is open day and night.
"Residents in the vicinity of the Porte Dauphine, one of the prin. eipa! "entrances, complain that the police surveillance is insufficient. They say that it is dangerous for a woman to stroll in the shady avenues even in the daytime.
come
It is also alleged "that police officers are not "sbove, jus- picion in the manner in which they carry out their duties, and an in- quiry is demanded.
Guides And Women. Certain officere, it is said, look with too benevolent an eye-upon the large number of foreign guides who formerly infested the Opéra quarter of the Grands Boulevards and have migrated to the Bois. These guides are alleged to be in league with undesirable who work hand in glove with.. thieves.
women
Recent police raids after night in the Bois have led, to numerous arrests, but secrecy has been ob served concerning the persons im plicated.
NI
Recently the police came upon a party of scantily nd poople in one of the thickets Half a dozen | luxurious cars were parked close by. The party fed panic-stricken when, the police appeared, but five were captured and driven in their own motor-care to the police station.
They were released after their games and addresses had been taken, and they had been warned that they would be prosecuted for indecent behaviour.
They explained in their defence that they were rehearsing ancient") Greek dances.
Commissary The Police astonished when he found his pri soners, two women and three men, were all white-haired people over 30 years of age.
They were 3. prominent manu- facturer, aged 70, and his wife, aged 50, a business man of 65 and his wife, 60, and a commercial traveller aged 01.
