YESTERDAY'S FREIGHT

RETURNS,

VERY LOW IMPORTS.

THROUGH FREIGHTS GOOD.

The returns from thirteen arrivali and eleven departures during the 24 hours ended at 9, a.m. yesterday showed a very poor total of mer chandise for this port. Through freights, however, remained good. Only six-British arrivals and three departures were shown, but among them were the best cargo carriors.

Ning vessels discharged 3,760 tons of general merchandise for this port of which three were British ships and contributed 2,300 tons.

The two best cargo returns were shown by the as. Cremer (Dutch) from Balik Deli and Singapore with 991 tons. The .. Euschow (British) from Tongshan and Swa- tow was second best with 930 tona. Eight vessels carried 18,760 tons of through cargo of which four were British ships were responsible for 8,909 tons. The best carrier was the .s. Ouderkirk (Dutch) from Kobe and Foochow with 6,310 tons of general cargo. The s Bengloc (British) carried 5,447 tona of merchandise from Middles borough and Manila.

A complaint has been received from the Chinese Government at Canton, stating that rivar steamers have been passing Whampoa at an. excessive speed and causing damage, to the bund and crop, by their wash. The Harbour Master, Ceme mander J. B. Newill, R.N., D.S.O..

· has been asked to warn the maitera of river steamers about this matter. Several Captaing of Canton River steamers were interviewed and shid that the complaint was by no means a new one. The Whampoa Authori ties have sent in numerous com plaints of this nature and only** KHIVA" recently the Canton Authorifies sent a circular letter which the LAHORE masters of vessels concerned were asked to sign. One Captain' said that the Authorities at Whampoa were annoyed (heused a less respectful expression) over the damage which was done to a launch lying alongside the wharf at Wham- poa.
