The following statement has beer issued by MrJohn E. Baker, General Secretary of the China Famine Relief Committee, dated August 27th:-
Famine in China is a fact. It is ot merely forecast for next winter; it is a fact now.
About eight miles west of Lia tsing, in Western Shantung, begins a strip some 30 miles wide and about 100 miles long, where practically hone of the fields have more than a third of a crop and some bave none at all. I visited this area and saw the results of drought, the ravages of grasshoppers and the extremities to which the people are reduced. I have not covered the whole Brea. But I went to Lintsing, where I met a group of representatives who came from the areas just indicated. I selected two of the districts among the many which were named... One of those districts, I visited myself. To another I sent Dr. F. F. Tucker. Оп return we compared notes! and found our experience to be practically identical. The reports which had been made to us were verified in detail,

But the chaff biscuits, I could not swallow.
But I refrained from even tasting one common form of food in this village-fried grasshopers. One alley in the village of Shao Ku is known as "spinners' row." I was told that in all of the houses grass hoppers were the principal form of diet. I turned into one. Grass- hoppers fried was all there was to eat in the place. The one old man in the house was an advanced case of impatqzgo. He had two bandfuls of cotton lint which he was spinning into thread. He was paying one per cent. per day in- terest on the few coppers of capital necessary to finance bim from lint to thread. His two brothers were out begging, but they would catch some grasshoppers if their begging proved fruitless.
The Well-Digging Scheme. There are reports from Northern Shansi, from Honan, from other that severe privations are even now parts of Shantung, which indicate being felt. I am quite sure that the drought famine of 1920-21 ‹ was' of far wider extent than the areas affected this year. But the inten sity of the famine in the regions affected this year make the situa tion perhaps more desperate. If opportunity be given this autumn along the Chikli-Shantung border to work for five catties of beans and kaoliang a day, I feel sure that the representatives of fully 1,000,000 will ask for work.
