(FROM OUR OWN CORRESPONDENT.]

LONDON, July 28th.

FOUR MILES HIGH IN THE AIR.

MOTH.. 'PLANE · BREAKS A WORLD RECORD,

AIRMAN" AND WIFE REACH 21,00011.

At Stag. Lane Aerodrome, Edg- ware. on July 25th, Coptain G. de Havilland, the aircraft designer and pilot, who was accompanied by Mes de Havilland as a passenger broke the world's altitude record for two-seater light aeroplanes by reaching a height of over 21,000 'feet, or about four miles, in an | hour and ten minutes.

This flight was accomplished fa one of the de Havilland new 100

same type as that which won the h.p.. Gipsy Moth 'planes of the race for the King'e Cup. The height reached was 9,300 feet higher feet made on October ath, last than the previous record of 18,700 year, by the Germans, Joseph Bohne and R. Lofink, in a 60 h.p. Wright Baumer monoplane.

I learn that a concession in the matter of the registration of British Patents in China has just been obtained as a result of represents tions by H.M. Government. Various trade organisations in this country drew attention to the difficulties ex- perienced by British firms in effect- ing registration of their patents inject to slight correction for tem- China under the provisional Chinese perature and barometric pressure, regulations, owing to the fact that and to homologation by the F.A.I., while specifications are required in the Chinese language, there ire many technical words in English which it is absolutely impossible to translate into Chinese. -

An intimation has now been officially received here that the head of the Chinese Bureau of Patente has agreed that specifica- tions may be lodged. in English, but they must be accompanied by Chinese translations, or, at any rate, by an explanation in Chinese which gives the gist of the Eng- lish text as far as possible. It is further agreed that in all cases the specification in English shall, for the purpose of registration, be the ruling text.

The British Film Industry. From information which has renched me it is plainly evident that there has been remarkable pro- -gress in the production of British Alms since the Cinematograph Filme Act came into operation at the beginning of the present year. Under this Act a specified pro- portion, or quota, of British films must be shown at every perform 'ance in picture theatres as Д counter-poise to the preponderance of foreign films that was the rule, It appears that up to. a few weeks. ago 112 British films were register. ed as against 872 foreign films in the same period.

Forty British films have been shown to the trade this year; and there are a further 4 completed films awaiting similar exhibition which is always the preliminary to public presentation. Moreover, 15 Glms are in course of produc.. tion, and 78 additional subjects have been scheduled for public perfor mance by British film companies in the course of the next few months.

The significance of these figures become apparent. when it is recalled that in previous years, before the quota was imposed, the average production of British films was only 28 per annum. It may be added that the future of the industry seems assured. The response of the public in financial support of the production of pictures made in this country has been quite remarkable,

The new height figures are sub

Degrees Of Frost. The aviator carried in the machine & held barograph which automatically records the height attained, and a thermometer.

The thermometer at 20.000. re- corded a temperature of 27 degrees below freezing point. Captain de Havilland remarked landing that it wae & welcome relief from the beat at lower levels,

Mrs. de Havilland, who follows) her husband's serial activities with keen interest, now has the distine tion of having flown at a greater: height than any woman in England.

When respiration became difficult the oxygen apparatus, which had been specially installed in the machine, was brought into use,

Queen Mary wore an embroider- ed dress of a colour between blue and green, Light blue is her favourite shade. She carried a parasol to match the dress, and also wore a toque, and white shoes and stockings. The King appeared in a grey frock coet and top hat. With the Royal pair, who came out of the Palace through the garden entrance, were the Prince of Wales, the Duke and Duchess of York, Princess Mary and Viscount Lascelles,, and the Duke of Glou- cester, the Duke of Connaught and Prince and Princess Arthur of Athlone were also in the Royal- circle, the two Inst mentioned being in deep mourning for their son who died recently as a result of a motor- ing "accident.
