£50,000 LAWSUIT SETTLED..
ROMANTIC APPEAL BY INDIAN PRINCE.
K.C.' £3,600 BRIEFS.
One of the most romantic and
costly law cases of modem times ended abruptly in London on July 23rd, after many thousands of pounds had been spent and famous comel had argued intricato legal" | points" for more than three weeks.
Lord Shaw, presiding over a Judicial Committee of the Privy Council, announced that in the sppeal of the Maharajah Bahadur Keshava Prasad Singh the parties LONDON, July 28th.
had agreed to settlement. The The resignation of Dr. Randall previous week Lord Shaw suggeet- an agreement might be Davidson, Archbishop of Canter-ed that bury, is officially announced to take reached. Negotiations to this end succeeded, after the Etigante had effect on November 19th. His dispensed with counsel's aid and successor will be Dr. Lang, Arch-settled their differences." bishop of York. These changes full general expectation, and are in accordance with what I wrote on the subject some months ago: The Primate's resignation has called forth a wonderful demonstration of respect and esteem, and even affer tion. In the last few days tributes have been paid to him by dis tinguished people in different walks of life in the course of their public speeches. This spontaneous expres. sion has not been confined to the Church of England. Nonconformists in England, Presbyterians in Scot land, and Jews, and many others not particularly identified with re- ligious life have offered their res pectful homage.
An Ecclesiasticał Statesman, There are many obvious things that might be said as to the dif Sculties that beset any man who is called upon to fil the chair of St. Augustine. What can be, truly. said of Dr. Randall Davidson is that he has always proved himself a statesman with the qualities of leadership that few men possess And he never displayed these qualities more notably than after the rejection of the revised 'Prayer Book...

Costly Jewels.
The maharajah and his suite came to England especially for the hearing of the appeal, and mem- bers of the party, picturesquely dressed and wearing costly jewels, have been present at the pittings.
The atmosphere was' сде пот usually to be found in the austere boardroom where the sittings were held. The twenty counsel engaged in the case and the other parties made it necessary to enlarge the room by removing the book shelves which normally line the walls.
The appeal concerned three pro- perties, 15.000 acres of land in Burma, and a house and elaborate garden in Dumraon, Burma The maharajah's opponents were Rai. Bahadur Harihar Prasad Singh and Babu Chandradeo. Prakhash Singh. They were represented by eleven counsel, the maharajah by nine.
Fifty thousand pounds are be lieved to have been spent on the law costa. Two leading counsel Mr. Leslie de Gruyther. K. C., for the maharajah, and Mr. Upjohn, IC.. for the opponents were briefed for £3,600 with 100 guineas a day refreshers. Other counsel received proportionate fees.

Dr. Davidson's Plans, Dr. Davidson's long and con- spicuous services to the Church of England and the nation are to be marked in November by the offer of a national tribute of gratitude, esteem and affection. A fund with this object has been launched and is being widely supported. In the months ahead till his retirement the Archbishop will spend a good deal of his time at Canterbury. On his retirement he will live in London in an old house in Cheyne Walk, Chelsea, which he recently bought,
Archbishopa and bishops are entitled to pensions payable by the Ecclesiastical Commissioners from their common fund, to which esch archbishop and bishop has to con tribute a portion of his income. The Primate's pension will amount to £1,500 a year.
The New Primate. Dr. Lang, who is 63 years of age, receives a most cordial welcome as the new Archbishop, being re- garded as a man of remarkable strength of character. It is a little curious that the ecclesiastical head
