Blindfold flying," instituted at the French training aerodrome of. Toussus-le-Noble, is now being employed regularly to teach airmen how to navigate entirely by instru. ments, and 'without once; catching sight of landmarks on the "earth below!

A specially-equipped aeroplane is employed. The pilot occupies the) front seat, and the instructor takes his place behind him.

The machine is then flows up to n high'altitude. Whereupon, warD- ing the pilot to get ready, the in- structor causes a hood, arranged on a collapsible principle, to rise from the front of the machine.

Passing over the pilot's head and descending behind his back, this hood envelops him completely in a little light-proof chamber, the in- structor being outside the hood, to wards the rear of the machine, so that he is in a position, in a case of emergency, to take charge by means of a set of duplicate controls.
