The appeal states:— The Ross Institute and Hospital Tropical Diseases which is situated in beautiful surroundings at Putney Heath, near London, was founded two years ago as a lasting tribute to the work hd genius of a great man. Sir Ronald Ross identified the Anaph-les Mosquito as the carrier of be malaria parasite, and by this discovery has been the means of bringing health and security to millions in fever- infested regions all over the world.

MR. JOHN MASEFIELD'S
TRIBUTE.
Mr. John Masefield writes:- "When I was a boy, I had friend from whom I parted in July. In August that friend was in a small barque in a Brazilian yellow fever port. He died of yellow fever with most of his shipmates a few days after his arrival.
In those days, this was a common necurrence in the yellow fever ports Men made their will! or resigned their souls before they went to them. Sometimes ships would lose their entire crews there, and new crews would also die. No man knew how the disease came, nor how it could be cured, or prevent- ed; it was one of the mysteries and one of the terrors of ille.***
While I was still a boy, I passed sorie summers in a land where nearly everybody was inconveni enced by mild attacks of malaria during each summer. "Lord Desborough, for the Home Cice, said that there had been many appeals to the Home Office from people who said that such acts of cruelty to animals should be punished by flogging or even by torture but it was doubtful whether the old penal system of an eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth would be tolerated. It was doubt ful, mareover, whether magistrates would indict corporal punishment They seemed averse from imposing severe penalties.
Then Sir Ronald Ross discovered the part played by the mosquito. in conveying the malaria parasite, whole. vast and instantly the mystery of tropical disease was made clear, little remained but to "find the carrier" of the germ, of each disease.
