WISE SHOPPING.

SUGGESTIONS FROM; WHITEAWAY'S SALE.

Sale time is, or should be, the time when you shop with even, more intelligence than ordinarily. It is an excellent rule to go round the house, through linen and glass cup- beards and your own wardrobes, with a note book before going out shopping, noting down all losaca, worn out articles, needs, and things You would like to get. Two lists should then be compiled one of necessities, the other of things you will get if they are to be had ad- vantageously. From each of these lists you can make other shorter ones to be attacked in turn, of household, children's, your hus band's, and your own needs respec- tively. Armed with these lists and with the determination not to get either overtired or to buy wildly, you will find sales shopping most delightful and proitable,

Here are a few things which I noticed in Whiteaway's this week, some of which will probably come on your lista. Brightly coloured scarlet China teapots for 81.93 and 82.50 äccording to size. The nursery

JAPANESE LACQUER AT

KOMORS.

The season for bridge parties and whist drives is approaching and Mr. Komor has not forgotten that fact. He has brought with him from Japan a very quaint and appropriate collection of inexpen- sive articles which will make de lightful prizes.

Most of these are articles in Japanese lacquer and all of them astonishingly cheap There are card boxes to take two packs in dark ble or red lacquer with cards on the top in red and gold which only cost 93. There are tunket boxes of black lacquer inlaid "with mother of pearl and painted, ivory, baxes and trays inland with shell for only $2.50. The workmanship and artistry of these things is astonishing for the low cost.

LINGERIE, LIKE ITS WEARERS, BECOMES A MERE SHADOW.

Modern lingerie is a charming as it is scanty. The importance

of line has reduced underwear to, the mallest possible proportions and the two seis shown are designed especially for use with dance jrocka.

would love one and so would an invalid who is shut away tem- porally from the bright and colour ful things of life.

Crystal butter dishes in plain glam for $1.03 and in", cut glase $276, they are an ample size and well made of clear bright glass.

Seamless English Axminster cat- pets measuring 1 feet by 10 feet 6, in several very pretty colours and designs for $150 and $175.

A buge pile of towels of all sorts and prices, guest towels and beach ones, pursery towels and the softest and most absorbent ones. for the tiny baby, and a very cheap brand for husbanda who don't use safety razors !

Three or four of those excellent "Icy-cool" all-metal English fee chests, which are white onameled with untarnishable steel fittings, and rua very easily on castors. They are warp and cockroach proef and can be kept spotlessly clean with very little trouble. At sale prices, the big model costs $150 and the smaller one only $95.

You can buy a big brown clonm English tea pot for only 8, and no pot makes better tea than a cloam one even if it is a little "homely" in appearance.

Cretonnes, for which Whiteaway's art famous in the Colony can be got at much reduced prices, and thore is a long table piled with remdants of them, of other furnish- ing materials and of, curtain nets. Home of these are really long and useful longths and they are all very cheap.

There are also some very lovely examples of Japanese "gold lacquer, finger and almond bowls and coffee Beta, which are rather more expen- aive but. by no means dear. I saw one set of almond bowl, spoon, and six little dishes, in deep red lacquer lined with gold on which an iris was most delicately etched in dark' green and silver, for only, I think, 810. Finger bowls can be had to match it, but it would be hard to resist the beauty of another set of bowls which are red inside and out, and have gold lacquer vine leaves inside.

This lacquer work is practically indestructable, it can be washed in

boiling water, and will not chip and break so easily as glass or porce- laine. Mr. Komer told me that he has seen an old customer Intely

who told him that a set of lacquer finger bowls bought from him seven Fears ago, which had been in con- atant use, were to-day as good as new. Among other useful and pretty gifts I found handkerchief

There is to be an auction sala at

THE SION OF THE LANTERN on the 90th of this month after which the business will be closed. I hear that Sennet Frères are moving into the premises. There are a number of attractive things left in the Laz- tern, a little furniture, many lamp

shades, some porcelain and a lot

of trifles of all sorts, and the auction should be well worth attend- ing..

PAMELA's summer sale is proving no wonder 45 very popular and there are some really very good bargains in oay and evening frocks, sports things, hats and French shoes.

A large shipment of new silks and this printed georgettes "arrived week at the PIONEER SILK STORE and among other new good's 1 noticed a00e pretty little .un- turnishable gold metal bangles for 21 each.

PORCOMULL's showed me SOME new fugi silk in all the newest shades which had just arrived and are included in the sale at a very low price. Many of the silks are below

market price as there is a large stock to clear. Another new arrival is a case of Kayser silk stockings in, the new shades, and I found that Haori coats were being sold at a very low and tempting figure.

FELIX is the name of an attractive shop which was opened some time ago in Ice House Street. They are

at present having an August" sale in order to make room for more goods. Everything is very much reduced and all hats are cheaper by at least $4 than the ordinary very low prices. FELIX's buyer knows that what most people want here is smart little hats and frocks at a reasonable price, and has spared no pains to procure them. Every- thing is distinguished by good style and cut, and shows that very chatm ing modern tendency to be decora tive without loss of line. You will find this a very pleasant place to shop in, and will be amazed at the very low prices asked for charm- ing little evening frocks..
