The Canton Political Council has passed a resolution to have a census taken of the population of Canton, and the Municipality have been ordered to carry it out.
The Inst census was taken in the 14th year of the Republic, and was carried out by school students. There is some doubt whether the results were accurate, Since then it is thought Canton's population must have undergone considerabic change, and a new census is neces- sary. Taking a census of the in- habitants of Canton is bạt an initial step towards taking a census of the population of the entire pro- vince of Kwangtung.

of them received a slight wound on the side of the head and another a wound on the leg. Yet another man had his finger almost bitten

Three members of the crew were. taken to the Central Police Station where they were detained, but the charge against them was not reveal- ed.
Up to a late hour last night the Police were still on guard over the vessel and the remainder of the crew were not allowed on shore.

The new pump is a solo machine, Mr. Carrie said, and it requires only one man to do the job. The spray is alte finer and does not splash. He has so far received only one pump of thie type but he hoped to get more in the near future. He therefore proposed. that the work of lime-washing should again be done departmentally at the rate of $3 per at..
Dr. Tso, in seconding the pro- posal, said that he was glad that careful consideration had been given to this question. He would," however, ask the Board to "giré strict instructions to the inspectors in charge of lime-washing to see that the ceiling was first white.. washed and then the walls. If the latter were done first, the dripping from the ceiling would again spoil the wall and damage the furniture.
Mr. Carrie: I think this is the practice in most cases, However. I will see that it is carried out.
