LONDON POLICE BRIBERY CHARGES.
BARRISTER M.P.'s GRAVE SPEECH.
"CORRUPTION AT THE VERY TOP."
Grave charges of corruption were made against the Metropolitan Police in the House of Commons by a well known barrister M.P., Mr. T. J. C. O'Connor (Con., Luton).
His speech was made in the course of a debate on the appointment of Lord Byng as Chief Commissioner.
"You don't bring a man of 63 into the Metropolitan Police, and a relactant man at that, if everything is plain sailing in a body of that sort,
asserted Mr. O'Connor.
Had there ever been a period in the history of the police force, he asked,
when at one time three special commissions were necessary to investigate the relations between the police and the public? He did not think it was an experience that ever appeared to be necessary with the provincial police..
He thought it right the Home Secretary, Sir W. Joynson-Hicks, should know some of the things that had. after investigation, given Serious cause for alarm.
The Home Secretary must know that it was alleged that third digies methods were not uncommon at Scotland Yard and that the case investigated by the Savidge Tribunal could not possibly have occurred as an isolated incident.
Taxicab Charges. The Home Secretary must have in his mind the Goodwood convic tions of a couple of years ago when provincial policemen of whom the country could not be aufficiently proud thought it their duty to lay information and bring for convic tion members of the Metropolitan Police.
It is rumoured among taxicab proprietors, proceeded Mr. O'Con- nor. that lubrication has to be employed to get their taxicabs pass- ed by Scotland Yard. It is not tittle-tattle. If the Home Secretary will approach any taximen in the rank in any part of London he will give him his own personal ex- perience.

The recent decisium of the Privy Vuurčil plated Nedfoundland in undisputed possession of a large part of the Labrador peninsula.
