DIARY OF EVENTS.
HUNGER IN RUSSIA.
BREAD FAMIÑE AND RIOTS.
PURCHASES OF GRAIN FROM
ABROAD.
THE DECREASE IN BETTING,
FROM OUR OWN CORRESPONDENT. ]
LONDON, July 14th. " Canatic comments are made in the London papers on the scarcity of wheat in "Russia. The Soviet mis-rulers of that unhappy country have to go outside, to purchase grain. This week six cargo boats are busily engaged at Rotterdam in lending up with 30,000 tons of wheat for Leningrad. This large shipment forms part of "purchases amounting to 200,000 tons that the Soviet Government has made dur- ing the last few days in their efforts to ease the bread famine and quell the riots which are taking place in Russian towns.
To most people this fact is re garded in the light of a tragedy when it is recalled that under the old regime Russia was one of the great- est grain exporting countries in the world. In 1913 Russia sold for export no less than 1,300,000 bushela of wheat. In those days the indus trialised nations looked to her for their bread almost as much as they did to Canada and the United States. But under Socialism even her own people are faced with star- vation and have to line up in bread queues. This is a 'basty jar for cur home-made Socialists whose eyes are turned to Moscow with a look of admiration.
Judges And Jurtes." For the second time within two years a jury has given a verdict in favour of a plaintiff without even hearing the defendant in de fence of the suit. It is decidedly embarrassing for everyone concern- ed. There is a maxim among the lawyers that "short cats waste time," and it is true in the cases' in question. Juries who showed a dis- pasition to come to a decision in a hurry used to be told in the old days by judges not to play the fool; but Mr. Justice Avory deals with them in another way.
MR. BOTTOMLEY'S LIBEL
ACTION.
CONDUCTS HIS OWN CASE.
ALLEGATIONS IN NEWS. PAPER ARTICLES.
LONDON, Jaly 13th. Mr. Horatio Bottomley appeared in person to conduct his libel a tion against Messrs Hurst and Blackett, Ltd., publishers, and Mr. Henry James Houston, his former secretary.
The action concerned passages in a book called "The Real Horatio Bottomley," written by Mr. Hous- ton and published by, Hurst and Blackett.
The book stated: H.B. had an additional source of income. Shall I call it an unofficial source? It concerned An Aspect of H.B.'s journalism that outspoken people. would describe as clever blackmail."!
Outlining his case. Mr. Bottom ley said that after his (Mr. Bot- toniley's) conviction in 1999; Mr. Houston began a series of articles for a Sunday newspaper.
"In putting me right with the public, declared Mr. Bottomley, he called me a pickpocket, a forger, a thief, a fraudulent bank- rupt, and all sorts of things of that kind." He (Mr. Bottomley) brought an action in respect of the charges and had been paid damages by the paper concerned. The articles were reproduced in The Real Höratio Bottomley."
The book, however, contained the additional charge of
'blackmail.'
Mr. Bottomley declared that there was not a scintilla of foundation for the charge of blackmail.
The hearing was adjutined.
Anyway, whatever the reason may be, racecourse companies all over the country report a falling off in receipts, and some of them are faced with a serious financial pro- blem. Things have reached a pass that it is being suggested that even- ing race meetings ought to be or- ganised during the period from the middle of April till early September.
Summer-time which
gives us an extra hour of daylight makes this practicable. The rail- ways might be trusted to assist for evening race trains at special fares would help them to tap a ECW source of income to swell their de pleted revenues.
But the question is who will take the lead in this matter. The race- course companies want the crowds
in their thousands as in former days or they cannot carry on. No- thing can, however, be done with- out the full approval of the Jockey Club, and I understand the active support of that body is not likely to

After all, there are always two sides to every story.. It would be extremely unfortunate if an idea got abroad that the judges would accept the finding of a jury as soon as they decided to stop a case and return a verdict. It was the late Mr. Justice Wills who made the wise remark from the Bench that it is necessary not only that instice should be done, but that it should appear to be done.”
The Future Of Racing.
It has been common knowledge for many months that race-going and betting have been on the de cline, Some say this is due to the betting tax, which is probably true. at least to some extent; others de clare it is due to dog racing which is doubtful; others attribute it to the ever-growing popularity of motoring, and think that "those who used to bet now spend their money on running a cheap car.
