This fact is so marked that you might almost judge a man's status at the game by his predilection for this particular bid.

Certain players in my own circles are registered in my mind as "Two Bidders. I love them very much as men, but I hate them as part- acrs, because I never know what they are driving at. There seems to me no method in their madness." 'Sometimes they bid two on a suit of six, headed by Queen, Jack. On other occasions, they make the same bid, holding a suit of six, headed by Ace, King, or King Queen Or they will make the bid on a suit of six or seven headed only by Queen or even Jack.

I have tried to work out the rea son for this strange obsession, and I can attribute it only to a mixture of fear and selfishness combined with a dim recollection of an old and discarded convention when Auction was in its infancy, and an initial bid of two meant length with-eight small alabaster jars, and a out "tops."

The truth is the initial two bid is neither fish, flesh, fowl, nor good red herring.

It is not pre-emptive. It tends to stifle the partner and stimulate the opponents, and it is not a win- ning bid unless partner happens to hold a hand that exactly fits when bid of "One would have achieved the purpose just as well and without any mystification.

The Americans, with their passion för standardisation, have attempted to conventionalise the two bid. Mr. Milton Work, in his latest book, states that the bid, whether in á major or minor, means & suit of six cards headed. by the three top honours with no particular strength in the other suits.

No doubt if this were universally recognised as the meaning of a two bid all would be well, but as even Mr. Work has been unable to im- pose this use on the American card- playing public the adoption of it 'can be regarded as little short of a secret convention which should not be used unless its signification is previously explained to partner and opponents.

A very sound American writer, Mr. R. E. Needham, in his recently published book, "Auction Bridge Sidelights," combats Mr. Work's proposed convention. He writes:

The best argument in favour of the two bid is that since the four card suit bid has been adopted so widely, a bid of two should be maile to show length in addition to strength. There is a good deal to be said for this in major suit bid- ding. If first caller bids " One," he may hold only four. If he bids "Two" you know he holds at least six.
