Precisely! Even as you and I.")

It Is Our Nature.

I don't suppose anything on earth will prevent us from trying to get dresses out of remnants from which we should be content to get jumpers, so let us concentrate on making a success of the job.

A Practical Suggestion. Let us deal, as an example, with that particular length of brocaded lame. Instead of the obvious and banal border of satin, let us at a time when oblique lines and one sided effecta in dress-making can do no wrong, insert two diagonal strips of plain silver lamé either with straight or shaped edges.

Study the dress shown at the left of the big sketch overleaf and you will see the effect of this treat ment, then examine the small dia- grams below on this page and you will find how very easily the result is achieved.

Both back and front, are made exactly alike (except that the diagonal lines run in an opposite direction for the front to make the brocaded lamé meet in V's at the side scams), so it is only necessary to describe one of them.

3

A Pattern In Brown Paper. Take a well-tried pattern of's straight one-piece dress and cut it out in firm brown paper. Having divided the brocade into two pieces (one for the front and one for the back), take each piece and draw two straight diagonal lines about 4 inches apart with pencil or chalk on the wrong side of the material, as in Fig. 1.

A Small Saucer Will Help. If a curved edge is required, as in the big sketch, chalk out a series -of semicircles (a small saucer will act as a guide) touching the straight lines already drawn, as in Fig. 2

Mark these curved lines with a line of tacking that shows up clear- ly on the right side, then send to

Have Silver Linings.

The ideal Gnish to a dress of this kind would be a blue velvet ansă lined with silver lumé.

TH

Such a lining makes the loops of the bow stand out in the most ap proved manner, besides striking note which proclaims it as being of the very last moment. The ends should hang well below the hem of the dress to give the uneven line that is still fashionable.

The Design Applied To Other Fabrics,

This design could be applied prae- tically to any fabric with success, providing the material for the diagonal bands be chosen with dis crimination.

Black piece lace could be eked out with black georgette; spotted. foulard with plain silk; floral chiffon with plain georgette, and plain metal tissue with metal lace. The first-two small sketches give an ides of what such dresses would look like.

Another Awkward Length. The other figure in the sketch overleaf shows a dress made on the same principle from a length of black velvet that is not quite enough to make a long-sleeved frock.

It is an attractive alternative to the usual obvious method of adding plain georgette sleeves, and there absuld be no difficulty in finding an other" awkward length "-of black lace this time for the purpose.

The tailored velvet belt is finished with a paste buckle and eyelet holes-items that are well worth buying at sales.

The third of the small sketches shows the same idea carried out in checked tweed and plain woollen jersey cloth

The same white with blac, yellow, orange, green or pink borders is seen in a great pile of tes cloths, duchessa Bets and sideboard cloths which are amazingly cheap, the smaller pieces under a dollar.

Down on the ground foor, I noticed piles of cotton veiles and ginghams ranging from 50 cents to $1.60 a yard, ladies summer vests under a dollar, silk stockings in all shades for $1 a pair, and any number of other useful and attrae- tive things to spend money on.
