Three blank cartridges were fired, but the trawler still gave no sig, and when two shells were fired across her bows she steamed TIENTSIN away at full speed with Spey in pursuit.
Spey was much the faster, but hampered by the rough sea, and the Figan doubled constantly, making boarding impossible.
Fire Hose As Weapon. Finally Commander Scott manoeuvred Spey's bow on to the trawler's lee quarter with the pb- jeet of cutting away the coverings Concealing the Wigan's identity marka.
This failed, two of the trawler's crow keeping off the naval men with boat-hooks.
Lieut. Woodriffe tried to wash with the away the coverings fire hose, and so threatening did he consider the attitude of the men with the hooks that he turned the hose on them.
Fearing that his oil fuel would give out Commander Scott wire lessed for a relief gunboat, but the trawler then surrendered and was escorted into Campbeltown. The chase and the defiance lasted seven
hours.
Nicholas Wright, master of the Wigan, was fined £100 with for- feiture of the net for illegal trawl-
