BOARD OF TRADE ACTION.

The Daily Mail of July 6th pub, lishes details of a determined effort now being made by the Mercantile Marine Department of the Board of Trade to prevent over-loading of British ships, a practice found to be prevalent in foreign ports.

Every British ship carries on each side amidship the Plimsoll line, which shows the maximum depth to which the ship may be loaded...

It is called after "the late Mr. Samuel Plimsoll, who was MP. for Derby from 1569 to 1890. He carried on a vigorous campaign against sending unseaworthy ships to and succeeded in getting the load sea

line 'made compulsory.

Following the loss of the Eastway, in the North Atlantic in October 1933, as a result of overloading to the extent of 13in., the Board of Trade institused Inquiries to errtain how for this was an isolated

'case,

While from a few ports the re ports were reassuring, from many quarters came information definite ly catablishing that, over at the was prevalent in many parts of the July 31st

world, particularly in the American Chenan, British str. 1,355 tons, constat trade, Mexican Gulf, St. Capt. J. D. Fraser, from Shang-Lucia,' and in the River Plate hai and Amoy, with a general cargo, lying at buoy No. B9 - B. & S.

Profitable Voyages.

The British consul at Norfolk, Virginia, United States, found that Devaronger, Chinese str., 1,022 tans, probably 50 per cent. of the ships Capt. E. Niedke, from Hoihow, leaving that port are loaded above with a general cargo,_lying at|the Plimsoll mark. He has even buoy No. C14.--Chau Yue Teng. received reports from seamen that Ern, German str., 836 tons, Capt. overloading to the extent of a foot

From the information received by Board of Trade it appears that this practice is due to rapacity of some shipowners, who insist on ship. masters carrying maximum cargoes.

A committee of Board of Trade experts and representatives of the shipping classification societies is now sitting. It is considering what. modifications of the existing lead line tables are necessary and also CANTON whether it may be desirable to in- troduce special lead lines for tim- ber carriers and oil-tankers.

STRAITS & CALCUTTA.....

In submitting its conclusions to the Chamber of Shipping for their observations, the Board of Trade makes a number of suggestions as 10 TIENTSIN means whereby the present position, might be improved. The conclusion reached is that the first object should be to imprem on all those pay. concerned that overloading does not

In one case a former shipmaster anya he was told by the owners that he would be expected to overload when abroad...
