Mrs. Hilton Philipson, M.P.. formerly Miss Mabel Russell, the actress, and Sir Gerald du Maurier were among witnesses who gave evidence in the King's Bench Divi- sion on the subject of "leading parts when an alleged contract to employ Mr. Barrie Oliver, the American musical comedy actor, in a leading part of "Hit the Deck " at the London Hippodrome was the aubject of an action.

"I am so sorry; I am so ner- vous," said Mrs. Philipson to Mr. Justice Swift when she left the box on the completion of her evidence. Mr Justice Swift: Unless you had called attention to the fact that you were nervous, nobody would have suspected it.....

Mr. Justice Swift later forbade the public in court to laugh at the evidence,

Mr. Oliver sued, Messrs. Clayton and Waller, the theatrical pro- ducers, and Moss Empires, Ltd.,

Mrs Philipson, M.P., said that it was perfectly absurd to describe the part offered to Mr. Oliver as a leading comedy part.

Sir Patrick Hastings: Suppose you had a contract giving you leading comedy part, would you consider that this part, would have complied with your contract - should have considered it to be most damaging to my reputation and I should have walked out of the theatre straight away,

Mr. A. J. Cook and Mr. James Maxton, notorious extremiata of the Labour Party, have issued a manifesto which in effect a de- claration of revolt against the pre- sent leadership and policy of that party.

What amount of support these two extremists have behind them is somewhat doubtful, but it notorious that there is a fairly big section of the Labour Party in Great Britain that is dissatisfied with the "go slow attitude of Mr. Ramsay MacDonald. Whether they will carry their opposition to the extent of accepting Mr. Cook Bad Mr. Maxton as the leaders of: a new party is perhaps doubtful; but in any case the general public would do wisely to recognise the fact that within the Labour Party there is a strong movement for re- fusing any kind of co-operation with capitalist leaders of industry, and for carrying on unrelenting war against capitalism.
