RED-HOT IRON IN DEATH SENTENCE DRAMA.
SURGERY.
PROF. BIER'S THEORY.
OLD AND NEW METHODS.
MURDERER'S CRY OF * MOTHER"
WEEPING WOMEN.
There was a dramatic scene when sentence of death a passed at Durham Auites En Norman Elliott, aged 20, as arylum attendant, for the murder of William Byland Abbey, aged 31 cashier at the Ferryhill, County Durham, branch of Lloyds Bank.
Mr. Abbey was found in the bank stabbed in the throat. As he was dying he said, A tall iman did it." Elliott remained unmoved until the phrase "should be hanged by the neck " was reached.
At a meeting in Berlin Professor | August Bier expressed his belief that in its onward march the medical profession has left behind an invaluable weapon--the "actual cautery." He urged that we should go back and fetch the redhot irons with which our forefathers so vigorously wrought against discost, and he supported this plea by re ference to nearly 300 patients treat ed by burning in his own clinic, Among those for which he claimed sucross were cases of inflammation, round the heart in which the out- look seemed hopeless, and of sup purating joints where the only chance seemed to lie in amputation.
He seemed to be calling, Mother, Inflammation and fever, he said, mother, and his sister and a girl are the two chief means by which friend who sat behind the dock the body reacts against infection, broke down and sobbed bitterly. and where the reaction is inade Women, who formed half the people quate it must be stimulated artiin court, also wept, ficially.

Elliott replied, "My ford, I am quite agreed with the verdict of the jury a gards the judge's sum ming up, but I think you omitted evidence which we depended largely 90. That was that I and Mr. Abbey lived close together and that I knew him well and that he knew my name, which is very important. have nothing more to say,"
Speech From Dock. Elliott had stood unmoved when When a method of treatment bas been in use for a thousand years or he heard the verdict. He was ask. cre, it may well be a mistake toed by Mr. Justice McKinnon if he discard it too suddenly. For ex
had anything to say before sea- ample, we are to day discovering tence was passed. that bleeding has more to re commend it than is commonly sup posed, and the same is doubtless true of cautery, though there are certain good reasons for its decline. Before the days of antiseptics, the application of a hot iron was the only effective means of combating infection in a septic would; no thing else would stop bleeding, kill bacteria, and leave a clean surface when the damaged tissues, had loughed away. The method is still employed, with admirable result, in various operations where blunt knife," electrically heated, is used to divide one structure from another. But in minon surgital practice the cautery has been almost displaced by antisepties, irrigation, and the knife.
The Virtues Of Irritation.
וי
It is not, however, as a cleansing agent that Professor Bier seeks to re-introduce it, but rather as a counter-irritant, and he is probably right in saying that. counter irritation has been
much neglected
Mr. Justice MacKinnon, passing sentence of death, said, "I deare by no words of mine to add to the poignancy of this moment. Nor is
necessary to use any words to others in the court. I believe there must be very few, if any who will need dission from crime so horrible, so cruelly calculated",
Midnight Quene,
A queue had started to form out side the court'soon after midnight, Three women arrived at 5 am, and by 9 o'clock more than 100 people were in the queue.
Mr. Justice MacKinnon, in his summing up, said there was evid- short of ence that Elliott was too
money before the day on which the bank was robbed and that he was spending lavishly afterwards, and £175 was found in his room at the asylum and in his wallet. Alt of it was in Treasury notes, some of which were proved to have come from the bank. It was only £27 short of the total amount taken, and some of the notes were stained with human blood
Many different methods were formerly employed for the purpose. There were blisters and plasters still used to-day. There was the seton, a piece of thread drawn to and fro through the skin, so as to set up infammation over a small area, and there were other devices with the same object, such as in- sertion of a bead under, the skin, or burning saltpetre on its surface. It is said that piercing of the ears was so much practised for ophthal mic disorders that anyone wearing ear-rings might be assumed to hare had weak eyes, unless he was a sailor.
Counter-irritation, properly done, is rational, because internal organa are indirectly connected with par- ticular areas o skin through the nervous system and can be in- fluenced from without. Irritation, moreover, directly increases the flow of blood to the selected locality, and this may be of the utmost value, because healthy blood contains sells and substances direct ly hostile to bacteria.
Dealing with the moment when Elliott said he was pulled into the man named Sinclair, bank by whom he accused of the murder, Mr. Justice MacKinnon said:
"If this story were true, can you imagine it possible but that Elliott would have rushed out of the bank, called to the many people there were about, and assisted in stop ping Sinclair, the real assailant
MOSCOW PESTILENCE.
INHABITANTS DRINKING
FILTHY WATER, -
A report issued by the Moscow sanitary authorities (published in the Pravda, June 1st) states that Moscor is a city of epidemics and the number of infections dis- eaves is growing."
1925
There is not in the whole city one disinfecting station, and of its 27,000 dwellings only 9,400 have modern sanitation.
A New Theory. Unlem remedial steps are taken the amount of pure blood reaching a particular area is apt to be re duced when it becomes infected Thus cautery and the ather From the figures cited it is evi stimulants mentioned may be of dent that Moscow is today the eity. in assistance against pris by draw most disease-stricken ing more blood to the scene of Europe. For: this he employs what seems to be An entirely new technique. The skin is first raised by dissection; then the underlying tissues are cauteria ed; and, lastly, the skin is replaced so that hardly any scar is left This subcutaneous cauterisation, he claims, causes substances to pass into the circalation which protect the body against bacteria, but this view will not appeal to those who regard the products liberated in damage, whilst electricity can be burns as directly poisonous. Nor useet to heat the tissues to any re- will deliberate destruction of tissues, involving liability to inquired degren short of burning. The fection, commend itself to practi- actant cautery may have its own tioners who are satisfied with other special advantages, but Prof. Bier's appeal-although it comes with ways of getting the same results weight from a man who has render:
