The widow of a naval commander who was killed. in action in the North Sea in February, 1915, Mrs. Dorothy May Verner-Jeffreys, off Totnes, Devon, sought a declaration in the Chancery Division of thei High Court, that a transaction by which she borrowed £500 from Mr. Joseph Pinto, of 44, Kingstreet, Hammersmith, was void under the agency clause of the new Money- lenders Act; or for a declaration

But there are said to be 33,000 to 70,000 of them régistered in the Prefectural Offices of Japan, and this year it is estimated that they will barn 70,000,000 gallons of fuel oil in their variously assorted-en-taining a covenant to pay £500 with giges. Seventy million gallons of interest at 46 per cent., and counter fuel oil is about 300,000 tons.
The actual percentage of this im- ported is not accurately known: about 50 per cent. if all guesses be taken into consideration and domes- tie production be discounted.
Sales of fuel oil to ships in the traps-ocean' trade amount to 18,000 or 20,000 tons a month. There will be a marked increase in this as the plans for operating Diesel engine powered ships on the Trans-Pacifc routes of the Nippon Yusen Kaisha materialize in the next five years.

It seems to be generally accepted that the Japanese oil fields are rapidly being worked out. The domestic production is only enough: at best to apply the needs of the Navy and a part of the nation's demand for illuminating oil and gasoline. Unless the North Sagha lier fields which are being exploit ed by the Japanese rapidly come in with increasing production, im- ports are destined to increase. Especially is this so sipee many manufacturing industries are tura- ing their attention to fuel ail ar a substitute for 'coul.
The Japan Steel Tube Co. is now burning oil in its furnaces and boilers, The Furukawa Mining Company
uses fuck oil for it pumps. At Ashio Copper Mine, several important spinning com panies have trial installations; the Asahi Shimbun in Tokyo ures oil in its beating plant. The tendency in new steam power installations in industrial works is towards oil, a tendency which is, however, not particularly encouraged because of Japan's ecanty resources of this
commodity.
