DEVELOPMENT OF THE LIGHT AEROPLANE.
Big advances were made in-avia, tion during 1927, according to the report issued by the Air Ministry
DR. "VORONOFF'S NEW DEPARTURE,

AMAZING EXPERIMENT ON RACEHORSE..
PARIS, July End. Not only the sporting but the medical world is interested in the remarkable performance. of the colt Don Zuniga in winning the Grand Steeplechase at Auteuil 5,000 metres with 2 jumps-in min. 44sec., a record, it is claimed,. that has never been approached in the history of the turf, and so out- standing that the popular press has given the colt the title of super-
horse."
From to-night's Intrauxigrant it appears that Don Zuniga's prowess is due to its having been sub- jected as a yearling to a grafting process invented by Dr. Voronoff. The operation was performed in Association with the eminent sur Keon Professor Gabriel Petit, of the Academy of Medicine.

Thirteen light aeroplane clubs are being assister, states the re port. Although more members are required by the clubs to place them on a sound footing, the position is being rapidly strengthened by the enthusiasm of the clubs' supporters. tive of the Intransigeant. purpose of the grafting operation, he declared, was to demonstrate its value in the case of young creatures equally with the old and failing. It had succeeded. "Grafting," he flying-said. "revitalises a decrepit or deficit organiem. We were concern ed to show that equally by an effect of continuous stimulation or en hancement it exalts, so to speak, enormously any physical qualities that may be more or less latent in young living creature that is still in a state of development,'
"A valuable result of the club movement is the large increase which is taking place in the num- ber of owners of private aircraft," adds the report. This is a direct consequence of the increased in terest in flying, improved facilities for tuition, and lowering of ex- penses brought about by, the clubs. One hundred and ten privately owned aircraft, including twenty seven belonging to subsidised clubs, were in service at the end of 1927, as compared with fifty-eight at the end of 1926, an increase of nearly
100 per cent.

There was no serious accident in regular air transport during the twelve months, says the report, and for the third year in succession no fare-paying passenger was injured through a mishap to any aeroplane registered in the British Isles. The total number of accidents was twenty-four of which five were fatal and three others serious.
Passenger Trame.
The record number of 28,764, par- sengers was carried on the cross Channel services by British and foreign aircraft, an increase of over 3,000 on the figure for 1028. The British share amounted to 57 per cent. The vitality of the joy- riding business was shown by the fact that 90,895 passengers were carried during 1927 against 81,000 in 1926.

FRENCH SCIENTISTS'
INVENTION.
Starting from the principle that water will "bail" in a rarefied
atmosphere at a low temperature, two French scientists, MM Claude and Boucherot, have built at Ougres, near Liege, a steam engine which will work without stoking and without a furnace. With its help they hope to tap the latent energy of the tropical seas by utilising the difference between the heated water of the surface and the cold water beneath.
The heated surface" water, en being introduced into a partial vacuum, "boils," and is condensed again by the cold water pumped from the depths. The difference be- tween the water in the boiler and the water in the condensor was 10 degrees Centigrade when the ex periment was conducted on June ist, and only one-quarter of the energy produced was absorbed in The value of the goods received gumping and expelling the water from or dispatched to the Con- In the tropics the difference in tinent during the year was the re- temperature is frequently. as much cord figure of £2,081,267, almost

For the first time in the history of aviation a water-cooled engine, which produced units of horse power in excess of its own weight in pounds, was successfully tried out. This was the Napier Lion engine used in the Schneider Trophy machine.
