EYE-WITNESS' STORY.

An extraordinary story of quarrel, which culminated in a fatal knife wound, on board an A.P.C. tanker while at sea between Shang- hai and Balikpapan, was heard at the Central Police Court yesterday
The particulars that are now available regarding the new P. & O.morning before Mr. R. E, Lindsell. steamer Ficeroy of India, indicate a distinct move forward in the matter of luxurious travel East- wards, says the China Express and Telegraph.
There must always be a difference between what is possible on Eart bound steamers and those that ply on the western ocean, comments the paper, for the simple and all suficient reason that there is far

money available by the travelling public to enit on in the ease of the Atlantic than there is when it is the Indian Ocean or the China Sea or Australian "waters.
Mr. Somerset Fitzroy appearing for the Crown, said that the accus- ed, Chan Tee Chung, was shipped as cook' mabo of the 8.3. Perlak at Singapore at the end of last) year.
Bye-witness' Story.
On June 18th, when the vessel was at sea some distance from Manila, a heated argument was overheard between the cook Yok Ah Chung, and his minte. Chow Sing Sau, a

normal way, apart from the limited number of pleasure travellers, are of the official, commercial, banking other working classes, who naturally are not prepared to pay the large sums for passages that are quite easily obtained on Westward
routes.
An attempt has been made by the P. & O to bridge some of the dis tance that separates the two cate garies, and the experiment will be watched with considerable interest. The chief departure from former custom is provided by the provision for the entire first-class cabins te be single cabins, arrangements' be- ing made for inter-cabin commupi. cation in the case of married couples and families. This is cer- tainly an innovation and a dis- tinet departure from previous cus tom, even if we have advanced somewhat from the conditions of years ago, when four shipmates had to do the best they could in a cabin none too large to accommodate thera. The new conditions should be much appreciated, and all routes served by the company will doubt- less wish that they too will soon participate in what Indis alone will have the benefit of for the present.
We
There is only one matter should have liked to see tackled in a more resolute manner; that is in the provision of a greater num ber of cabins being provided with their own bath-room accommoda- We would suggest that the tion. number of
bath-rooms private might well have been increased to add to the popularity of the stip. We can scarcely look for the same proportion that is now provided by the indern hotel ashore, though the latest liners for the Atlantic do in fact provide almost as many. He tween the number of such bath- rooms in the new. P. O, steamer and other up-to-date steamers there might have been a medium struck. Anyway, the single berth cabins will assuredly be a papalar feature, whilst the public rooms are to be of unusual size and luxuriously ap- pointed. Another feature to note in connection with the Viceroy of India, is that the propeiling ma- chinery will be on the turbo-electric system, thereby ensuring the mai-: nium of vibration. Altogether she is a departure for vessels whose rourse is via the Suez Canal.
