KING AMONG WINES.
TOKAY (Hungary). There is gladness in the month of June in the vineyards and the many, townships and villages which subsist upon the cultivation of the incomparable wines of Tokay, though always "n tinge of anxiety remains till the harvest is gathered in October. For as the pale yellow blossom has formed it has become evident that after two miserably bad years a vintage as copious and excellent in quality as that of 1021 is at last promised,

HONG KONG TIDE TABLE.
In the extreme north-east corner of the present Hungary, on the alopes of the last hills before the Great Hungarian Plain, is grown the wine that takes its name from this little town which curls around the foot of the Tokay Mountain, where the River Bodrog joins the Theiss. Hungarians spell the name Tokaj and pronounce it Te(k)-koy,
This is a closed district into which wines of no other kind may be imported. No sugar or artificial sweetener may be added to the wine. Guard Of Cossacks,
Tokay wine was famous in the time of the Crusades. The Pope is
said to have declared it the "King of Wines" at the Council of Trent. The Empress Cathering of Russia sent a guard to watch over the wines regularly purchased for her household, and Cossacks remained
here till 1840.

JACK-IN-THE-BOX ISLAND
FALCON ROOK NOW 530 FEET HIGH.
TWO MILES OF FLOWING LAVA.
AUCKLAND (N.Z.). A surprise was received by the crew of the New Zealand Govern ment steamer Tutanekai, on April 27th when a large and apparently unknown island was met with almost directly in the vessel's
course.
The Tutanekai was bound from Auckland to Samoa at the time, and it was soon discovered that the promontory was Falcon Island, which, since its discovery as a breaking reef by H.M.S. Falcon in 1865, has frequently vanished and reappeared. The island is not charted, being indicated merely a dangerous water in nautical charta.
Falcon Island showed exceptional- activity toward the end of last year, when it appeared well above the surface of the ocean. When been from the Tutanekai it was about 560ft. high, and about two- miles long. It was composed en tirely of lava flow, which was run- ning into the water and sending up clouds of steam. The Tufanckai steamed quite close, and those on board had an excellent view of the
mysterious island.
Captain J. Bollons, master of the Tutanekai, which has returned to Auckland, said it was by accident that the vessel steamed near the island. A northerly course was followed to take advantage of calm water south-west of Tonga, and Falcon Island was come upon quite unexpectedly. It was not known on board that the island was again showing above water,
