GIRL'S IMAGINARY ROSES,
NEW YORK, June 22nd. Modern youth has often been accused of dance madness, but several couples engaged in New York's dance marathon have turned that accusation into reality.
Seventeen couples have now been
on the Boor for 230 hours and are still tripping the light fantastic toe in an effort to beat the world's re- cord of $62 hours. Strange hallu- cinations and quarrels mark the progress of the contest.
One girl last night thought that the dance ball was a meadow full of flowers, which she began picking as she twirled slowly round in her partner's arms. She plucked visionary roses from imaginary bushes and strove to pin them in ber partner's button-hole.
When the whistle for rest blew she continued her enchanting exercise, but failed to respond to the sum- moning call and was disqualified.
One young man became convinced that a host of pickpockets and gangsmed were parauing him. Earlier in the contest he had been visited by these hallucinations, but they had been dispelled by sharp jabs to the jaw by his tender part
Der.
Finally he broke away and raced out of the hall in pursuit of one of his demons. He was disqualified for leaving the arena.
£340,000 FRAUT CASE,
TO REPAY CHICAGO TREASURY
"
NEW Yoix, June "21st. "Big Bill" Thompson, Chicago's hundred per cent. "American · mayor, and six political confede rates have been found guilty by Judge Hugo Friend, in the Chicago Circuit Court, of entering a con- spiraly to defraud Chicago of 348,000, and ordered to restore this amount to the city treasury.
The finding ends seven-year tax-payers' lawsuit against the payment of "real estate experts" appointed during Thompson's pre-
vious.
mayoral administration. These "experts" were to obtain £47,000 for their services, but they received in addition £346,000 from other city funds.
Judge's: Decision Judge Friend, in his decision, declared that the money was taken
"for the twofold purpose of financing the political activities of the Thompson organisation and for the private benefit of members of the conspiracy."
Other persons found guilty with Thompson inclade G. F. Harding, who was city comptrollers in charge of Chicago's finances in 1921, P. B. Coffr, now State Public Adminis trator, and a number of real estate
dealers.
Major Thompson statement to C Chicago voters de claring that the verdict is beyond my comprehension,”, and expreming the hope that "justice will be meted out in a higher court.”
Weeping Champion. Marianne Jacque, a thin girl with a touch of lipstick, who holds the dancing marathon championship, began to weep and to tell her beads until revived by her partner with WOMAN HERMIT'S MONEY, smelling salts.
Another girl became worried by her partner's countenance. She strove to push it way from her and Anally collapsed.
The grim spectre of arrest hovers over Dave Auerbach, another dancer, for the sheriff has arrived from his home town with a warrant. But the young man is still on the floor, his father having paid the bond. Meanwhile the sheriff sits grimly in the hall awaiting the moment when Auerbach and his
partner drop out.
TWO YEARS' SEARCH FOR
