A woman who has no country is Mra. Barbara Jackson-Lang," of Maida Vale.
Mrs. Jackson-Lang, formerly Miss Betty Isaacs, was born in Germany, and during the war-in 1016 she was deported, with many other German residents living in this country at the time.
After the war she came back quite openly, as she says and in 1920, she married an Englishman, Mr. Jackson-Lang, who is said to have left her.
A week ago she was arrested for being in England in contravention of the deportation order against ber. Yesterday Mr. Bingley fined

HIDDEN IN BUYER'S WASH."
او
P
JOHANNESBURO,
In authoritative circles sense- tional allegations of illicit traffic in diamonds between Namaqualand and the Lichtenburg (Transvaal) diamond fields are being increasing- ly made. It is declared that the number of diamonds leaving Nama- qualand by unlawful means is con- siderable.
One method adopted is for those engaged in the traffic to establish their headquarters in Lichtenburg and employ native and other run- ners to carry the stones Some- times, when the value of the stones is considerable, they are carried by the thief himself.
On arrival at Lichtenburg an op- portunity is awaited for placing the diamonds in the wash of the urchaser and the stone is eventual- ly sorted with the other stones found in the owner's claim.
The chance of loss is negligible, but it is obvious that the likelihood of detection is almost neglible. Even if the runner betrays his em ployer the risk is not great, and unless the transaction took place under the eyes of detectives there is not much chance of arrest.
Stones of Namaqualand origin are of such exceptional value that Mr. Bingley remarked: So they are eagerly sought after, and that she would have to spend her it is not surprising that illicit time going backwards and for-operations are being carried on on warda on the German Ocean 1" a fairly big scale.
**How can I be condemned to
o
live on the sea?" said Mrs. Jack son-Lang.
The few officials of the diamond detective branch at Lichtenburg are not sufficient to cope with the traffic.
"I have been living in this coun- try openly and legally for the past, eight years. I own this large house, possess a British passport THE YOUNG CRIMINAL. with which I travel-abroad, and in every sense am a citizen of the country, which is my home.
"Yet the other day I shadowed by a plain clothes detec tive from Maida Vale to Padding ton Green, where I went shopping. with my little dog. There, in the street, he arrested me for being in England.
Arrangements were made for bail but because they did not mature in time I spent the night in Holloway Prison.
