EXPERIMENTS ON ANIMALS.

" INEVITABLE,” SAYS SIR

-BERNARD SPILSBURY.

Sir Bernard Spilsbury, the pathologist, lecturing in London on June 19th, said: "In the present state. of medical knowledge animal experimentation is inevitable" ·

He was delivering the second Stephen Paget Memorial Lecture a the annual meeting of the Research Defence Society at the headquarters of the Medical Society of London. his subject being "The work and responsibility of a pathologist'

There were no means, he said, of testing organism except by the in- troduction of disease into animals. It was entirely by animal experi mentation that Pasteur obtained. resulta. Every such brilliant pathologist who worked alone in the smaller hospitals had to have & Home Office licence, for vivisection if he was to do his duty to his patients. That was why the aum- bor of licences had increased so greatly in recent years. There was the much misunderstanding of nature and effects of inoculation experiments on animals. In the vast majority of cases the initial- shock was no more than the prick. of a hypodermic needle. The de velopment of disease in some cases led to speedy death. In others, as in tuberculosis, where the progress of the disease was slow, the animal in time gave sufficient evidence of disease to enable it to be destroyed and its body examined. Certainly the animals suffered nothing as

Lord Knutsford criticised the methods of the British Union for the abolition of vivisection. The Union, he said; had sent to all its members a post card suggesting that they should ask the B.B.O to arrange a talk on anti-yjvisection... It was also very regrettable that anti-vivisectionists should try to persuade people not to apburibe to hospitals if there was a pathologist on the staff. Hospitals could not be carried on honestly and with fairness to patients without a pathologist or pathological know- ledge available.
