MR. AMERY ON FUTURE TERRORS OF OFFICE.
THE PRIMATE TO RETIRE.
THE DEATH OF MR. JOHN LEWIS.
FROM OUR OWN CORRESPONDENT,]
LONDON, June 16th. Speaking at the annual dinner of the Corona Club in London the Colonial Minister, Mr. Amery, said the other day he spent ten minutes in conversation by wireless tele- phone with Mr. Ormsby-Core who was somewhere in Java. He added that when he hung up the receiver he wondered what the life of the Colonial Minister would be when he was rung up by some of the 37 governors and administrators in the British Empire to tell him fluently. what they thought about his fattet dispatches, and, still more, when they could enforce their vocal powers by televisional gestures!
An Oxford Street "Character."'
One of the most remarkable men in the business life of the West End of London for nearly a couple of generations has died in the person of Mr. John Lewis. He was "more than 90, and was known to aboppers as the owner of the drapery" estab lishment in Oxford Street that rivals in size and importance the big stores. It was, however, a one-man concern, and was a survival of the days before the great limit- ed liability companies came into drapery in the West End.
