YESTERDAY'S FREIGHT

RETURNS.

GENERAL INCREASE IN CARGOES.

NINETEEN ARRIVALS.

With nineteen arrivals and six teen departures during the period ending at D a.m. yesterday the general cargo returns for Hong Kong and porta beyond the Colony showed a fair increase over the poor figures for the previous day. Of the shipping figures given above, seven arrivals and six de partures were British ships.

Local imports discharged from seventeen vessels amounted to 14,068 tons, and siz British vessels contributed 3,123 tons. The bert cargo return was shown by the s.. Batavia Maru from Bourabaya and | Tawan' with 4,417 tons of general cargo, while the sa. Tjisundari (Dutch) from Sourabaya and Mun- tok had 1,800 tona.

A total of twelve vessels carried 21.394 tons of through cargo for ports beyond the Colony, and, of this seven British ships carried 5,928 tons... The best carrier was shown by the 18. Tjisondari from Java with 7,680 tons of general cargo,

the 8.1, Nellore (British) was second best with 3,778 tons from Antwerp and Singapore. The P. & O. 3.N. Co., are the Agents of the latter vessel.

·Japanese motor-schooner Chin Yat Maru appeared before Commander J. B. Newill, D.S.O., R.N., at the Marine Court yesterday morning for being moored to the Yaumati Ferry Wharf at Shum Shui Po and having on board a cargo of 200 tins of kerosene on the 4th instant.

Lance-Sergeant Hudson who pro- secuted stated that be first saw the defendant's motor-schooner along side the Yaumati Ferry Whar! on the morning of the 4th instant. He told the defendant to move away. In the course of his patrol in the afternoon he again saw the •ALIFURE defendant's boat at the piar. HeNALIMBA “ arrested the coxswain. The defen- **KALYAN" dant pleaded guilty to the offenes†KASHGAR”- and said that he was unaware of MOREA the regulation. The Magistrate im ↑ "KEIVA" posed a fine of $30 with the alter native of one month's imprisonment | ↑ "ABI BEK" with hard labour.

Fishing In Prohibited Areas. Four masters of fishing boats were summoned before the Marine Magis trate for fishing in the prohibited areas of the Harbour and employ ing bright lights to attract the fish. Lance-Sergeant Bowers was re sponsible for the arrest of the de- fendants all of whom pleaded ignorance of the law and said that they usually did their fishing out- side the Harbour limits.

The Magistrate imposed a fine of 810 only each of the four defen- dants

Death On An Hul.” * The 8.3. An Hui which arrived here yesterday from Singapore and Amoy reports the death of a Chi- nese deck passenger from beri-beri on June 28th. The deceased was buried at sea the same day.
