NANKING AND THE SALT GABELLE.

PAO YU LIN LEAVES PEKING FOR DAIREN.

NATIONALISTS RELEASE POLITICAL PRISONERS.

CHANGES IN DIRECTORATE-GENERAL OF POSTS.

General Pao Yu Lin has left Peking for Tientsin, whence he has taken a passage for Dairen: General Yen Shib Shan sent a large force to speed him on his way, and apparently the Nation- alists heaved a sigh of relief when he went, and now regard the incident as closed.

It will be remembered that General Pao Fu Lin was the Northern general who remained behind to guard the peace of Peking until the Nationalists assumed full control. He remained "under a safe, conduct obtained for him by the Diplomatic Body, yet when in his retirement he had proceeded about 20 miles, he was stopped and ultimately disarmed by one of Feng Yu Hsiang's minor generala The Diplomatie Body at the time addressed. several strong, cotes to the Nanking Government, but apart from the promise of an inquiry nothing was done.

The remaining Fengtien troops that are still within the Great Wall are being withdrawn by Chang Hsueh Liang and Yang Yu Ting. Li Chung Jon is moving his forces to Sanhakwan to make sure that the evacuation is complete.

The Nationalist Government has ordered Yan Shih Shan to re- lease those who were imprisoned on political charges under the rule of Chang Tao Lia. It is stated however that any who are known to be Communists will not be released.

the Salt

The Nationalist Government's attitude towards Gabelle, and the question of whether they intend to meet their obligations in that quarter, is raising a good deal of interest and causing some anxiety. The Government's financial policy is meet. ing with a certain amount of criticiem.

SALT GABELLE.

(THROUGH REUTER'S AGENCY.]

PEKING, July 1st.

The salt situation continues to be the subject of the most serious discussions between Mr. F: Hussey Freke and the foreign diplomata and financiers. It was pointed out that het breaking would not neces- sarily effect the 1913 Reorganisa on which interest and tion Loon amortization has been met for several years from the Customs and not from salt. This interest

was paid to the bond holders promptly as usual yesterday from the Customs.

The loans chiefly affected will be Crisp Kukuange, the British and the French Loans, on which China is already defaulting.

The authorities mentioned con- sider that T. V. Soong and other Chinese financiers are anxious to re-establish Chinese credit abroad, but if they meet the service of loane out of ordinary revenue, and at the zame time destroy the

Gubelle, this would create a feel- ing that the new Government did not intend to keep the past loan agreements. Also there would be much doubt abroad as to how long the interest would continue to be met, and hence credit would be weakened and not strengthened.

It is understood that the Gabelle still has $800,000 in a group of
