CHANG HSUEH LIANG READY FOR PEACE OR WAR.

YEN SHIH SHAN'S WISH TO ATTACK.

DEMANDS MONEY FROM CENTRAL

GOVERNMENT.

There appears to be a great possibility of Chang Hsueh Liang bringing Mukden into line with the Government at Nanking. There are still difficulties in the way, but they do not appear to be insurmountable, especially as Chang Hinch Liang still seeins to wish for the settlement. At first it seemed that there might be some disagreement over the Nationalist demand that Fengtien should haul down the five barred flag and fly the Kuomintang flag in its place. Chang Hsuch Liang is now ready to do this, but he is still boggling over Sun Yat Sen's Three Principles,

There is, however, another side to the question. If the Nation- alists should attempt to advance into Manchuria, the Féngtien. forces have prepared a strong defence line at Luanchow, with trenches straddling the railway and stretching for 10 miles on either side. Large quantities of barbed wire have arrived from Mukden for use as barriers.

It is reported that Yen Shih Shan means to attack Manchuria in face of the wishes of the Nanking Government, which is opposed to this policy. The Shansi Tupan has, so it is said, increased his army by 100,000 since his arrival in Peking, mainly by re- organising errant Northerners. He is now asking for a grant from the Central Government.

SHANGHAI, June 97th. A message from Mukden reports General Li Chung Jen telegraph that negotiations between Feng-ed to General Pei Chung Hai, tien and Nanking are going on. It is understood that Mukden is wil ing to accept the Kuomintang flag, but Sun Yat Sen's Three Pria ciples are not acceptable.

Meanwhile Fengtien activities at Luanchew indicate that they are ready to make a stand against the advances

the Nationaliste. Trenches stretching for ten miles on either side of the railway are being built, while large quantities of barbed wire are arriving at Luanchow from Mukden.
