T.T. THRILLS.

RIDER IN FLAMES.

EIGHT CRASHES AND ALL RECORDS BROKEN.

DovoLAS, Isle of Man,

June 5th.

A motorcyclist in flames dancing about in front of the grandstand while officials chased him with fire extinguishers, cight, crashes, two of records them serious, and all beaten, were a few of the exciting Junior Incidents

to-day's in Tourist Trophy race.

The race was won in record time by Mr. Alec Bennett, of Southamn ton, riding a Velocette machine. He covered the 260-fhile 300-yards road course in 3 hours 50 minute 52 seconds at an average speed of 68.66 miles an hour. This beats the

"

Senior record of last year by 50 Records. It is Bennett's fifth T.T. win.

On one of his several record laps he averaged more than 70 miles an hour.

After his victory the crowd surg ed round him, girls tried to kiss! him, and there was a general call for a speech.

Ladies and gentlemen," said young Bennett, "I have had a

ride pleasant little

round the island."

That was all, but, he smiled broadly.

Mr. H. J. Willis, also riding a Velocette, finished second in 3hr 56min., or 0.18 m.p.h.; and Mr. K. Twemlow, young amateur from Sandbach, Cheshire, riding a Dot machine, took third place at 63.67 m.p.h.

Higher road speeds, more con- gested highways, and greater trac density in cities make it imperative that automobile brakes function with a wide margin of safety

in four-wheel brake One of the most important im design is the development of the amplified action four-wheel brake now standard equipment on all Erskine cars. This type brake has unusually effective braking power, and responds to light braking pressure.

Tests made at Studebaker's 800-

acre Proving Ground show that Studebaker and Erskine brakes will stop the cars in less than half the distance set up as standard by official safety codes.

At ten miles per hour the safety code of the American "Automobile stopping distance. Association indicaten 12.3 feet as a satisfactory Studebaker and Erskine brakes bring these cars to stop in 4.5 feet. At 13 m.p.h. the A.A.A code in- dientes-28.1 feet; Studebaker and Erskine test cars stop in 10 feet. At 93 m.p.h the recommended stopping distance is 79.2 feet. Studebaker brakes held at 28 feet. The A.AA. stopping distance at 33, 40, and 45 mph. are 133.1, 200 and 953 feet respectively, Stude baker and Erskine brakes bring the ears to a stop at 34.5, 1.6, and 90.6 feet respectively,

The self energizing feature of Studebaker and Erskine threw shoe brake design is largely responsible for this

stopping exceptional ability. Light pedal pressure turns a cam which throws the primary and auxiliary brake shoes against the brake drum The method pi holding these brake shoes to the brake housing is such that the rotation of the brake drum forces the secondary shoe against the four drum. Thus the actual motion of the car is utilized to increase brnk-

Meanwhile his machine was mass of flames and smoke, which strayed across the course. Frantic signals were made both by the ex- cited crowds in the grand stand and officials to approaching riders, who came charging towards the fire at about 80° miles per hour. Guthrie was slightly burned about the wrists.

"German railroads were respon- sible for the passage of this law," said Mr. Welch. Of recent years so many automobiles were parked close to the railroad tracks in cities and towns that the red glow of their tail lamps at night confused locomotive engineers who watching for their signals.
