Long before the docks were made there was the Port of London, but ships used to anchor in the river and discharge their cargoes into barges, which took them ashore. That was where the corruption lay, which caused the fierce opposition to the system of the decks.

Another girl lost a wheel going that it was arranged that the round, bend and wept so bitterly should take part in the final.

Jean Pierre Marchal, the youngest competitor, who is just three, was left at the start, having forgotten to change gear in time. He tried gallantly to make up for this later, but without success. Twenty yards from the tape Mlle. Carpentier was passed by a seven- years-old boy, Hobby Cesure, who

Indeed, the East End was a law to itself, standing shoulder shoulder against all intruders or would-be improvers, each man and woman engaged in one universäl and lucrative amusement-robbing the sailor,
In those days of long voyages a man might be paid off from his ship with nearly £200. With this in his pocket and having been a forced teetotaller for several months he would walk up Ratcliffe Highway. Here he would find him self in great demand, and after one or two celebrations the women of Ratcliffe would become veritable sirens--but, alas! there was Ulysses to compel them to stop their ears or to carry on.

So Jack would listen to the allur ing tales of comfort and promised care which should be shown to him "and he would make his choice.
The Next Morning. Next morning he would find him- self with a sore head and but few clothes, shivering in the street. He would fumble for his wallet, but that would be gone, too.
Philosophically he would stroll down to the corner of Well-street, where by time-honoured custom deep-water seamen would forgather, waiting for a ship. If lucky they would get a drink or two from some home-come mariner who had not yet met his fate and then to sen again in the first ship to sail, no matter whither bound nor whe ther & barguentine or full-rigged abip.

JATA, Palestine. A large survey party has left Amman, Transjordania, with eleven specially equipped motor cars to conduct a preliminary survey for the laying of an oil pipe-line from the Mesopotamian oil-field across the Great Arabiar Desert to the Mediterranean.
The expedition is financed by the Turkish Petroleum Company, Ltd.
It is stated that the Mediterranean terminus of the line will be Haifa, in the Bay of Acre.
The Turkish Petroleum Co., Ltd., in October 1912 acquired a conces- sion granted to the Deutsche Bank by the Turkish Government to work oil deposits over 80,000 square miles in the Mosul and Baghdad pro- vinces, Iraq. Thirteen years later, in 1923, a convention was signed by the Iraq Government granting the company a concession for 75 years. A period of three years was allowed
