There was no scenery. The im-

mense stone choir-screen served as a background.

The unseen chorus was placed on top of the choir screen. The actors used the crypt as a dressing room. The author of the play was Mr. John Masefield. Mr. Gustav Holst composed the music; and Mr. "Charles Ricketts designed the ros- tumes. The play lasted for one

hour and a half.

There were probably, to begin with, mixed feelings in the audience. At times, in the course of the performance, it was hard to believe the evidence of one'a ̈senses that anything so unconventional was happening in an English Cathedral-notably during the hum- cura of the shepherds, one of whom was a disgruntled Cockney, ex- Service man, while a second had Bolshevistic, or, at least, strong LL.P. leaninge

High Beauty, But if some of the audience came from mere curiosity, no one can Eave left without a deep impres son; or without the chastening feeling we get from scenes and thoughts of grandeur and,, high beauty

The play begins in Heaven. The doors of the screen open and admit four angels--the Spirits of Power, the Sword, Merty, and Light. To thes comes the Soul of Christ;"and an argument ensues concerning His

human life that in about to be.

The nagels were majestic Agures in cloth of gold. Christ was repre sented as a man in the middle thirties with calm but suffering face. The enacting of this part was the touchstone of the whole.

If it had jarred at all the whole play would have been intolerable. It was, as a matter of fact, as good As it could possibly have been.

The scene ended with Christ re- linquishing His sceptre and glitter- ing crown to the superb angela and departing in a simple white robe.

Splendid Picture...

The scene of the three kings fol- lowed. Mr. Rickett's many-colour: ed and most beautiful dresses hert made a splendid picture, with a great show of armour and banners, on the choir steps. The fine enan- ciation of the impersonator Gaspar, the second king, was noted here. Some of the other actors spoke rather too loudly and awoke a mass ot 'echoes.

The scene of the shepherds would have been riskyifa sincerity and, indeed, of sublimity had not already been established Of course, it is & sound medieval tradition that the shepherds should provide comic relief in a Nativity play.

Mr. Masefield has followed Mr. Rutland Boughton's "Bethlehem " in making his shepherds talk dialect. Tonight, the cockney shep herd who declared that:

One thing I can let them know, In the next war the workers will

not go,

was not a very easy actor. The I.L.P. shepherd who had to declare that:

It's time the workers should com

Humbert, Lord Oxford's solicitar, were the sole executors of the eriginal will, but under a codicil Sir Maurice Bonham Carter, Mr. Arthur Asquith, and Mr. Humbert were appointed...

The lapas of more than three months since Lord Oxford's death in the proving of the will has arisen solely from Mr. Arthur Asquith's absence in Brazil He London only a few days

He assured his audience that his own ambition had always been to be a good citizen of the State, and nothing more.
