CHIANG KAI SHEK ASKED TO RETAIN

HIS POST.

The Nanking Government, after discussing Chiang Kai-Shek's resignation, have decided that they do not wish to accept it. In consequence Tan Yen Kai and Chang Ching Kiang called, on him and pointed out that the Northern Expedition was not yet" over as the three eastern provinces remained unconquered. To fix such a term to Chiang Kai Shek's command recalls memories. of the Greek Kalends. Chiang Kai Shek would And great dif- culty in leading his troops to the Manchurian border at present, and once there would have to fight a powerful Japanese force be- fore gaining an entrance to the province. Within the province also there are strong forces of Japanese, besides the reorganised Northern armies, some of which are practically untouched by the recent fighting. Lastly, Nanking has several times announced its intention of not going beyond Peking.

The situation in Tientsin is quiet ne present, and it is hoped that the transference to Southern control may be carried out with- out any untoward incidents. Yesterday's evening papers announced that arrangements had been made to hand over the city to the Southerners to-day, June 19th. The preparations are well advanced, · and troops trains stand waiting at the East Station.
