AVERAGE.

General cargoes disebarged for this port during the 24 hours ended at 9 am yesterday were below average but the total amount of through freight was higher than usual, there being an average of over 3,000 tors per vessel. Cargoes carried by British ships were very law. Fifteen arrivals and twenty departures were recorded, in addi tion to five Japanese fishing vessels, which come ander the heading of junks.

(Danish) from Bangkok and Hol- Eurypylus, September 8th. how showed the best return with 2,358 tons, while the s.s. Hellar (Norwegian) discharged 1.500 tons from Bangkok and Swatow.

Nine vessel's contributed to the very good total of 21,000 tons for ports beyond, but three British ships were resposible for only 883 tons, The best carrier was the sa Katers Maru from Middlesborough and Singapore with 8,342 tons of gen- eral cargo. The 3.8. Sade Maru, also an N.Y.K. vessel, carried 3,830 tons from Nogoya and Shanghai.

Newill, D.S.O., R.N.. for blowing their steam whistles for a purpose other than navigation signals on the 5th instant at Kowloon City,

Lance-Sorgt Talyor prosecuted and the second and third defend « RANPURA" ants pleaded guilty. The first de-1ZAPORE" fendant pleaded not guilty," and **NOVARA stated that although his whistle was +"KHYBER" sounded he did not pull the cord. The defendant then explained that Manager of the Netherlands. Harbour. Works left for Home on that day, and was taken to the ship on his launch. The party left Kow loon City, and the Manager in re- ply to the farewell greetings of his friends, blew the steam whistle. The defendant warned the Manager of the fact that he was breaking harbour regulations and the action was not repeated. However, the Water "police officer camo along and arrested him.

"It was stated that a succession of aiort blasts were blown on the steam whistle and the Magistrate asked the defendant if he knew what such a signal meant. The defendant re- plied that he knew it to be the distress signal.

The Magistrate" then remarked that it was a curious signal to give as a farewell greeting. In any case, the defendant was responsible as master of the steam launch.

All three defendants were fined $5 with the alternative of five days' hard labour.
