LONDON, June 8th. The hearing of the appeal of Oscar Slater, against his conviction for the murder of the aged Marion Gilchrist at Glasgow in 1909, open- ed to-day before five Judges of the High Court Justiciary, at Edin burgb.

The Court is the one in which he was found guilty, and convicted.

Sir Conan Doyle, who has been one of the most active agitators for Slater's release, which was effected in November last year, shook hands warmly with the appellant when ho entered the Court.

Slater's counsel naked leave to call the appellant as a witness, pointing out that he did not give evidence at the trial, while he also applied for permission to call a fresh witness, and to recall Miss Gilchrist's maid, Miss, Helen Lam

Hiram Hastings, played by Glenn Tryon, is a hero for a night in a

MELBOURNE, June 9th.

As the result of the prolonged strike of marine cooks practically all interstate shipping except the servico to Tasmania, is at a stand- #till.

The Federal Premier, Mr. Brace, referred to the Industrial Regis trar's suggestion, cabled by the Premier of Victoria, to summon a compulsory conference to settle the marine cooke' strike.

The Seamen's and Stewards' Union bold a meeting on the 11th, at which they may decide to sup- port the cooks in view of the owners intention to eign on volun- teers.

The dispute will thus be seriously extended.
