RAMSAY MACDONALD'S REVIEW OF BIOGRAPHY.
THE GRAND MANNER THAT OFFENDED.
EARLY DISAGREEMENTS WITH LORD SALISBURY.
Mr. Ramsay MacDonald, the " Labour Ex-Prime Minister, yives
piquant review of the 1st volume of Lard Curzon'a Biography by Lord Ronaldshay.' It contains a most amusing ac count of the first personal meet- ing between the former Ficeroy of India and the Labour leader. A biographer who does not make his subject a hero in his own parti- cular line had better not put pen to paper. Lord Rosaldshay fulfils his test.
He has a difficult task, for com- mon report has not been kind. Lord Curzon, from his nursery up, has been presented as a "superior person," and though no one could withhold tribute to his ability and powers of work, attached to him were airs and demeanours which de- tracted from his personality. In plain words, Lord Curzon has been laughed at.
Gay Open Egotism. That Lord Curzon was genial to his-friends, that he was a bright spark amongst the gods, that with Olympians he could play the fool, is true, but he never adjusted him self to the common world outside to colleagues selected for him by others, to subordinates however able or highly placed. They tell in the Foreign Ofee how Lord Salisbury used to avoid him as an elephant | does some lively, fusing, persistent e creature; when I visited India and came upon his traces whilst they were still fresh, people admir ed but thanked God it was over: the shadow he left behind him wherever he worked was relief to those who had gone through the trial. And yet Lord Ronaldshay is right. When you got behind the mask rather, the castle walls-you found some thing very attractive, prodigiously full of information. and interest, gay and pompously cynical, an egotism that that had nothing fur- tive about it, but boldly stared you in the face. Very unlike though he was to George Wyndham, if ever you were to see the charms of either, the superior person in them had to be asleep. With great self-satisfac- tion have I frequently put a heavy peasant boot upon the dainty towa of both when their noses were in the air.
Contretemps.
My first meeting with Lord Curzon was one evening when Lord Morley, then Secretary of State for India, entertained some friends at the Athenaeum. I stood talking to my host when, to my consternation, Lord Curzon was announced. I had just been having a sharp passage of arms with him on the platform. I saw the advancing guest stiffen; his head rose in the air; hauteur infused his frame. He shook hands with his host, looking straight ahead as though I, standing by his side, was invisible. "You know Mr. Ramsay MacDonaldt said Lord Morley. The form turned ita upper parte, elevated its nose and chin, readjusted itself like an automaton, and with slow precision, keeping its hands over its belly the while, in formed Morley that he had heard of Mr. Ramsay MacDonald." Poor Morley; the outer casing of a wild storm of internal laughter, after a pause that seemed an eternity, turn- ed to
and stammered: ** I thought you would have met Lord Carzon before Solemnly re plied, in internal tortures, and with my eye twinkling between Lord Morley's and the mask which Lord Ronaldsbay bemoans: "My dear Morley, I have heard of Lord Curzon." The figure jerked and ad. justed itself, and the interval be tween the ticks of the clock seemed
