THE TATTOO,

OUTLINE OF PROJECTED PROGRAMME.

A CHEERFUL WEATHER PROPHET.

REPRESENTATIVE AND ENTHUSIASTIC GATHERING.

The first big meeting in connection with the Tattoo to be held during the first week of September in Happy Valley was called yesterday evening by H.E. Major-General C. C. Luard, C.B., C.M.G.

ed.

The old Chamber of Commerce room in the City Hall was packed with interested people representative of the services, the Naval and Military Y.M.C.A., who are uniting with the Military in the organi's- ing of the Tattoo, business firms and the European and Chinese Communities.

Major-General Luard in summarising the project in view said that it was hoped to give "a really good show of the type held recently at Home in London and at Aldershot. It would give everyone something to think about outside their daily routine and His Excellency specially hoped that the "spectacle presented would be enjoyed by the Chinese as well as Europeans.

Colonel Comyn (C.O. the K.0.8.B.'s) in the course of an inter- esting speech, described his visit to Shanghai, to enquire into the organisation of a successful tattoo held there last year. He estimated that the expenses should not come to more than 85,000, and said that the Shanghai Tattoo had been a financial success.

Mr. R. Sutherland gave an outline of the suggested programme which includes massed bands, military manœuvres and a series of episodes of the kind that are à popular, feature of the Naval and Military Tournament at Olympia. The first is a Highland scené with dances and songs; next comes a Buckinghamshire village with (Mayday celebrations held in front of the inn. The here is next seen embarking on a troopship for service abroad, and episode four finds him defending a desert fortress. The final episode is în England again and tells of the return of the hero to the girl he loves.

The suggestion met with the approval of the meeting and a number of rhmes, given below, were put forward for the necessary committees.

CO-OPERATION OF THE COMMUNITY. Mr. W. L Pattenden, Chairman of the Naval and Military Y.M.C.A said:At the opening of the new quarters of the Naval and Military YMCA, on Thursday last, I made reference to a Tattoo to be held in Happy Valley early in September. Those of you who were present or read an account of it in the Press may remember that the Tattoo was referred to in. omewhat vague terms. We are now going to put the scheme forward in a more detailed and comprehensive manner, for it is realised that, although the Mili- tary authorities will predominate, to earry out the scheme on the scale that is intended, in such a place

as this co-operation of the Com-

munity is essential. With the ob

ject of securing this co-operation His Excellency Major-General Luard has asked us to meet him here this afternoon to discuss the matter, I have much pleasure in asking Hi Excellency to take the Chair.

enquiries regarding the Tourna ment held at Shanghai not long ago and I will ask him to say a few words on the subject presently to explain how it stands from s Military point of view,

But on this occasion we propose to go further than they do at home or did at Shanghai, as we propose to bring in the civil element also, Fire Brigade, St. John's Am- bulance, etc., etc. and being for tunate enough to have amongst us a quite exceptionally gifted pro- ducer in the person of Mr. Suther-

Composite Committees. I think the nirangement whereby have composite--committees of Service Representatives and Civilians will commend itself to you! Speaking from our side, I would. like to make it perfectly clear that, wherens overything possible will be done to hold meetings and conduct organisations with as little loss of time and inconvenience to `members of Committees aa' possible, there will be a good deal of hard and res- ponsible work to be got through, but with proper organisation there

I think you will also agree with me that the venue of the Grand Tattoo is extremely suitable at Happy Valley especially as we hope to rely to a large extent upon the co-operation and assistance of not coly the Jockey Club, but the Golf Club. The general idea is to par- tially enclose with a matting fence some 10 to 12 feet high, an arena 150 yards deep, stretching from the end of the Pudie Enclosure of the Jockey Club, round to the vicinity of the Public Stands to the North of the Jockey Club property. It is considered that with the erection of additional temporary stands there | will be sufficient "beating accom modation for all. It is suggested, if circumstances allow, to hold the Tattoo on possibly three nights with a change of programme: not neces sarily three consecutive nights. Time of commencement to be 8.30
