HONG KONG "RACES.

HEAVY GOING RESPONSIBLE FOR MANY UPSETS.

BOXING EVE BADLY BEATS BIG BUNGLERS.

[Br. EARLY BIRD.]

The first day of the Hong Kong Jockey Club's fifth 'extra race meeting was decided last Saturday under mos: unfavourable conditions Owing to the intermittant ran it was quite obvious to those who were on the course carly that a "wretched track would be the result of the heavy downpour,

Rain continued to fall as Mr. Sutton gave permission for the jockeys to mount for the first race and the onlookers from their cony points of vantage realized as the ponics performed their preliminary canters past the stand that the riders and their game little mounts were in for a regular gruelling as the water which splashed from beneath the ponies hoofs clearly indicated the condition of the track.

One Third, who was considered to have a chanco by a certain few, proved a terrible disappointment and was only saved from utter disgrace by reason of the fact that Boxing Eve was eased off so early in the race, which enabled him to make up sufficient ground to allow de- of his being credited with a feat of only six lengths.

San Siego's connections must ap- Bais-preciate the fact that he was the luckiest porry on earth when he accounted for the Second Aggregate Stakes and I have no doubt they will recognize the futility of run- ning him again in this particular event when these are other races which are productive of better results.

At the post Mr. Fiddes Wilson endeavoured to the best of his ability to get the Geld away early but his kindly efforts on behalf of the riders were somewhat marred "by the inability of the novice riders to move into line. After a

up somewhat tagged beginning the field of 13 runners settled down and prominent amongst the leaders were Härtene, Faaling Stag and Duke of Nieblung. At the rock Westake ably ridden by Mr. Chun began to improve his position with Harlène and Ace of Spades out of the rate for keeps. Zin now came into the picture and joined West lake in an effort to run down Fanling Stag who although well in front was obviously very shaky. Westlake finally overhauled the favourite and ran on to win with "Zin just held off in third place.

THE NEW AMATEUR CHAMPION

WETHERED BEATEN IN

FINAL.

R. H. Wethered, the AmazeUY Champion of 1923, has failed to repeat his success in the Champion- ship, being beaten in the 30 hofs fins! by T. Perkins of Castle Brom wich by 4 and 4. Both had ecsy victories in their semi-final matches, Perkins beating D. Tulloch by 0 and 5, and Wethered winning from E. Tipping by 4 and 3.

This victory, coupled with his previous performances, marks out the new champion as a consistently fine player of real class, who should be of the greatest assistance in the coming Walker Cup matches. Last year he won the English Native Amateur Championship, and this year he reached the final in the same event, only to lose by the narrow margin of 3 and 2 to J. Stout of Bridlington; ..

The first results of the Interport betweed Shanghai and Hong Kong now in progress at Shanghai are to hand and show successes for the home side in all matches. No doubt the advantage of playing. in familiar surroundings had its influence on results.
