LIFE SENTENCE ON A LEADER.

CAREER OF wong TECK CHAI

The conviction of Wong Teck Chai at the Singapore Assizes last week on charges of being in possession of seditious literature and explosive substances, together with the sen- tance of penal servitude for life and 24 strokes of the cat passed by Mr. Justice Sproule, is an event of considerable importance in the his tory of Communist agitation in Malaya.

The case of an artist who married a woman after telling her that he was in love with somebody else was the subject of comments by Lord Merrivale in the Divorce Courtsi Lord Merrivale found the wife's allegations proved, but allowed the case to stand over for the King's Proctor to consider whether there had been collusion between the parties to obtain a decree niti.

The petition, which was undefend- ed, was brought by Mrs. Florence Mary Mackenzie, of Winchester Road, Hampstead. She sought the dissolution of her marriage on the Whca Bolshevism spredd from ground of the misconduct of her Moscow to Canton it was inevitable husband." The Communist advance occurred when the Singapore branch of the then powerful Canton Communists was re-organised, and a flood of seditious literature was let forth upon the Chinese masses in this country.. The First Failure. Then came the attempt to as sassisinate Dr. C. C. Wu, a former

member of the Nanking Govern- ment, while he was passing through Singapore. That was the Com- munists' first serions failure, and the would-be assassin was subse- quently proved to have been the appointed of Communist headquar- ters in Canton to direct the organi- sation in Singapore,

the reverse of idle. Raids were car- ried out wherever Communist ac-

On the face of it the petition seems a collusive proceeding, sad, if so, the wife is barred from ob taining a decree from the court. I have grave doubts that I ought not to dismiss the suit, but I will not follow that course. The wife has been remarkably ill-used.

"It happens that the court can get proper assistance to deal with sach & case as this, which is not free from difficulty. The misconduct at the High Wycombe hotel has been proved. The papers, however, will be sent to the King's, Proctor to investigate the matter there has been no collusion between the parties the court will pronounce a decree."
