WEEPING PRISONER.
STRATTON, Nr. Bude, There were many dramatic duels again in the little police court. at Stratton, when William John May nard, aged 36, a rabbit trapper, appeared on remand charged with the murder of Richard Francis Roadley, aged 84. in his lonely rettage at Titsch,
After a long and heated duel with Chiet Inspector Prothero, of Scat land Yard, who was in charge of the case, Mr. W. G. G. Seager, the Exeter solicitor who is defending Maynard, appealed to the Beach for an adjournment.
This more than human endur- ance can stand," he said. "I feel I cannot go on any longer to-night"
The magistrate had agreed to sit until 10 p.m., bus out of considera tion of Mr. Seager they adjourned
at six o'clock. -
Maynard looked as relieved as anyone when he heard that the court was to be adjourned. He jumped up from his chair, stretched his arms, and swung himself up and down on the side of the dock,
Accused Man's Emotion.. When Inspector Pill, of the Cornish constabulary, was giving evidence of what he found at MF.
Roadley's cottage on the day after the murder, Maynard began to weep bitterly. At one stage be jumped up and said, "May I say a word!" His solicitor told him to sit down
and be quiet.
When Inspector Pill was finishing his evidence, Maynard cried, "Have you spoken the exact truth? Can you look me in the face and say that is all the truth I have a wife and children."
He was told again by his solicitor to keep quiet, but he jumped up once more and cried, "Please, can I speak↑ " He had to be pushed back into his seat.
There were sharp encounters be tween Mr. Seager and Chief Inspec- tor Prothero.
