VOLUNTEER DEFENCE CORPS.

IMPRESSIVE CEREMONY ON MURRAY PARADE GROUND.

"ONE ENSIGN IS BEST OF ALL, THE DEFENCE OF THE FATHERLAND."

LADIES ENTERTAINED AT VOLUNTEER HEADQUARTERS.

A very impressive ceremony was held yesterday morning on the Marray Parade Ground, when HE, the Governor (Sir Cecil Clementi, K.C.M.G.) presented their Colours to the Hong Kong

Volunteer Defence Corps.

The Murray Parade Ground had been lent for the occasion by Licut-Col. Comya, CM.G., D.S.Q., the C.O. of the K.0.8.B. and by 9.15 the 'matshed stand was already gay with the coloured frocks of the ladies who had subscribed to the Colour Fund and other friends and relatives of the members of the Corps. The Parade Ground was surrounded by interested spectators, European and "Chinese, when His Excellency's car arrived at 9.30.

The Governor in the course of an inspiring speech, in which he explained how the colours came. to be presented, said that military duty was now-a-days less gay and colourful than it used to be, but that it demanded from the soldier even greater gallantry But though khaki has re- and devotion than in bygone times. placed scarlet, and most of the trimmings worn to-day by regulars are not worn by Volunteers, the spectable by no means lacked colour and the bearing of the Volunteers was as stirring as any band of troops could be PRESENTATION OF COLOURS.

The Corps, under the command of Liout. Col. L. G. Bird, D.S.C., were drawn up facing the matshed stand and on the arrival of His Excellency the Royal salute was given. The corps then formed a hollow square, the drums were carried forward and piled in the centre before His Ex-considered. cellency and the colours, cased,
