ARMIES.
The birthplace of Confucius, Chüfu, which is a short distance north-east of Fenchow, has fallen into the hands of the Nation- alists. They have also captured Ningyen, which is about 30 miles north-west of Yenchow, so that, though the Shantung troops in Yonchow are still putting up a sturdy resistance, the situation is critical.
Marshals Chiang Kai Shek and Feng Yu Hsiang have finally joined forces at Chufu, and they claim to have made. immenso captures of men and munitions at this point.
The Northerners intend, to make a serious attempt to sem the tile of the Kuomintang advance at Tainan, but, judging from Reuter cables both the British and American Consule-General and the Japanese authorities' believe that the Nationalists will soon be in Tsinan.
Marshal Chang Teo Lig appears to be making no personal' effort to protect Shantung. "He has assembled his forces aï Tek-- chew on the border of Shantung and Chihli, where he is straddling the Tientsin-Pukow railway and making ready to resist the entrance of the Nationalists into Chihli. The defeat of General Sun Chuan Fang appears to have been even more complete than was at first announced, as his whole army of 30,000 men has been wiped out.
The whole of the 7th Northern army is reported to have gone over to the Southerners, and there have been further desertion CA a large scale.
