No. 10, WYNDHAM STREET, P., Box No. 620. TONG The

The Evening Standard learns that a zerom view is being taken by Scotland Yard of the trafficking in revolvers and automatic pistols which has been discovered by police investigations in London.

Inquiries by a Freesman eatab lished these facts:-

(1) There are 100 Irish gunmen in London employed in illicit trade in revolvers.

RIDING A RESTIVE MARE.

RISELEY (Bedfordshire). The Prince of Wales had an astonishing escape when riding bis hunter. Degomme, a spirited mare, in the Brigade of Guards. Inter- Regimental Point-to-Point Race here. He was leading the field, and had passed the seventh fence when Degonime mado a mistake at the stream.

His surprise was ec manifest that the driver of the van produced an automatic in his right hand and told him to "clear out of it."

The driver spoke with an Irish brogue.

When the police tried to trace the car they found that the num- ber plates were false.

Scotland Yard believe that the Irish gunmen in London, alarmed by the activities of the Special Branch, are changing their revolver dumps.

He was thrown in the air, turned a complete somersault, and alighted squarely on his feet on the soft clay

of the bank.

A Smile For The Others, He ran a few yards out of the way of the oncoming pack of riders, 20 yards behind, and as they went by he smiled at them and waved his hand.

Then he shouted: "It's all right, Carry on."

His attendant reached him and asked the Prince, "Are you hurt,

sir 1"

The Prince answered, "Of course not. I landed squarely on my feet."

Degomme is the mare who car ried him to victory in the Welsh Guards' point-to-point races at Tet- bury on March 1st. She was restive to-day.

There is no doubt in the police. When the Prince emerged from mind that the weapons are un- the changing tent before the race doubtedly smuggled into London in he mounted Degomme at once. As

order to arm companies of the Irieb Republican Army.

WHY ARE THEY BEING

ARMED?

But the police have not yet found out exactly what plan lies behind this arming of disaffected young

Irishmen.'

The revolvers are amuggled from the Continens. The smuggling, in the police opinion, is facilitated by the present day lack of coastguards. Apparently it is a simple matter for smugglers to put cut in a motor boat from Boulogne or some other French port and to land undetect ed at various parts of the English

coast.

he cantered away fo the starting post it seemed dificult to keep the mare in the line with the other riders.

Very quickly, however, the Prince mastered her, and he trotted through a gate scross two pasture fields to the starting point.

When the race began Degomme carried the Prince well ahead of the The first fence, 200 yards rest. from the start, was taken by the Prince at least half a dozen lengths in advance of everybody.

He took the road and gathered his mount under him beautifully Nothing seemed likelier than that the Prince was going to run away with the race when he came to the

Before, however a charge can be: brought under this section it has to be proved that a prisoner car- ried a revolver with intent to kill.

Police officials consider that there should only be two forms of punish- ment for being in the possession of firearms without a licence either the "cat" or. penal servitude.

Apart from the activities of the Irish gunmen, a considerable illicit trade in revolvers has sprung UP since the war. Among criminal classes.
