WONDERFUL INDIAN SILKS AT. THE PIONEER STORE.
From India, a land proverbial for riches and colour, jewels and all that is gorgeous, have come to the Pioneer Silk Store some of the most beautiful materials I have

Printed Satin, crêpe, georgette and minion, have been woren with gold or silver threads to make materials which remind you of the three cloaks demanded by one of Grimm' Princesses, of sunbeamia, of moonbeams, and the third of the starlit sky.
In Grimm's day such materials existed only in the imagination of a poet, but to-day they are being woven for the saris of Indian royal ladies, and for us, European ladies. "Some of them seem too rich and

wonderful to be used alone even for evening wear, but, in combination. with plainer stuffs they would be perfectly lovely, and, happily, fashion has degreed that we may combine our materiala. Some of the satins would be lovely for evening shoes,
White Straws At Ho; 10.
In Madame Barrault's I'found a collect of white straw hats mostly untrimmed. They all have the new gracefully sweeping lines to the brims though none of them are really very big. Crin, horsehair, rice straw and fancy lace straws are all used, and all very slightly stiffened, so that the line is pre- served without that hardness of effect which does so much to detract from the chio of the cheaper straws,
Any description of these materials seems almost impossible, they must be seen to be really appreciated but I may be able to give you just an idea. There is an all gold tissue satin woven with a kind of reptile skin effect which might be used for shoes or strappings. Among other leaves. A lovely material is ninon antin brocades was one with jazz printed with a flower pattern of pattern of orange and peacock blue mauve and wine red, over which with silver stripes, and a white | design of bell-like flowers has been satin beauté printed with a small woven in gold thread. Another design of blue and pink which had ninen flesh coloured, has a printed Either of flower border of pink worked with bands of gold thread. these would make very wonderful gold threads. evening cloaks
Deep peacock blue georgette is embroidered with a spray of rowan berries in red and silver with gold (Continued on next Column).
Other new materials this week are georgette dress lengths with velvet brocade borders in new designs, and white fugi with woven silk stripes in various colours

SEEN" IN LOCAL SHOPS...
MADAME SARBAULT has received a delightful box of flowers which was being unpacked when I went in the other day. They are for the most part quite "small posies of one or two flowers intended for either hat brim or corsage, and I noticed that the colours were mostly in tones of pink or blues or a combination of the two. The dress designers have spoken very decidedly this season on behalf of pastel shades, and flowers are following suit.
Hew Frocks,
A shipment of new dresses is ex- cepted at the SIGN OF THE LANTERN to-day. They will be afternoon and smartly cut morning dresses for the most part, I think, and will very certainly be worth seeing at once, As Miss Horness only gets a few at one time and they are apt to go quickly.
Cushions.
I saw.come very nice cushions of silk poplin and silk jaspe in WHITE- AWAX, LAIDLAW's this week They aro made in a wide variety of two colour, effects with bands of ruching, in both round and square shapes | and are certainly not dear at $7.50.
Table Glass...
The same shop is expecting a large consignment of Belgian crystal table glass on Monday. As you probably know this Belgian crystal is almost the only glass which does not deteriorate in a damp climate, and the shapes and designs are very good,
Bath Salts And Other Triñes.
The latest comers to that depart ment of LANE, CRAWFORD's' which is dedicated to my lady's toilet are Elizabeth Arden's bath salts in green and rose put up in most at- tractive bottles. The green are scented with Russian pine, the pink with red roses. Big boxes of Yard- ley's dusting powder, soented with lavender or roses are also new to me, and I was told that some very tempting pocket combs are on order, and expected soon.
A Man's Tavention.
сап
A man's invention, for men, which will certainly find favour in feminine eyes is the new armchair ashtray to be found in WHITE AWAY'S It is an electroplated. guget which combines nahtray and tumbler neither of which possibly upset. The suede strap is Etted with a spring which clampa it firmly to the chair arm, and no matter how clumsy you are you cannot knock over your tumbler or spill your cigarette ends on the floor. The price of this treasure is $2.95 glass included.
Sals At Pohoomni's. PONOOMUL's stockings sale begins on Monday. Every thing is being very much reduced and a special opportunity is affered of getting embroidered scarves and shawls ut very small prices from $4 and 810 respectively.
I saw there this week soms nice dress lengths of bordered embroider- ed voile, and of white crêpe de chine with a persian design border in colours which I thought parti cularly pretty and unusual.
Butterflies.
LANE, CRAWFORD's ladies' depart- ment have a charming novelty; little silken butterflies beautifully made and painted, which can be secured to dresses, Bowers or hats by the small safety pin hidden under the body of each. They are in every conceivable.colouring and in two sizes at 85 centa and $1. gonn
Mosquito Nets.
The sun has not alas como out alone, many of those most unpleas ing of insects, mosquitos, having come with it WHITEAWAY's - nets are well known and approved Sof, being fully guaranteed against abinkage, etc The square kind are from $14.75 the circular from $10.50. Cotton Volles
I noticed in the same, shop, some very pretty cotton voiles The bor- dered designs are particularly, at- tractive, and a new feature is that the border is less, destinctive being really an intensifying of the pat tern. This is a good idea is especially with short frocks,n strongly marked border often has abortening effect. I thought the range of black and white designs espacially good.
