RUMOURS OF A NATIONALIST DISASTER.
» NANKING REPORTS STEADY ADVANCES.
FENGTIENESE PRESSING IN ON SHANSI.
CHRISTIAN GENERAL'S THREAT TO TAMING.
SHANSI CLAIMS CAPTURE OF
PAOTUCHEN.
War reports to-day are even more contradictory than usual. A Bruter cable from Shanghai tolls of a defeat of Marshal Chiang Kai Shek which, if true, is a disaster for the Nationalist cause. It is even rumoured that Hauchow has fallen, though the Northern- ers themselves do not claim this. A Naval Wirelers messago states that firing has been heard at Pakow, but it seems impossible that the seat of war can have moved as far south as this,
In opposition to these reports, the Nationalists claim a steady advance all along the line, with several quite considerable ne cesses. They have made a rapid advance up the Shantung coast line.
The Christian General announces that he has captured 4,000 Fengtienėse and large stores of ammunition. He expects to reach Taming within a few days.
Reports from the Shansi front are equally contradictory. The Fengtienese claim very material advances to a position which threatens one of the few passes into the province. Shansi "mes- sages on the other hand, state that all attempts to break through their defences have been frustrated. 2,000 Shansi prisoners passed through Peking on Wednesday.
Shansi troops also claim an important success in the north where they have occupied Protachen, in the Shiuyuen district, the terminus of the Peking-Shiyuen Railway. NATIONALIST - DISASTER.
INTRIGUE RAMPANT AT NANKING.
THROUGH LUTER'S AGENCY.]
SHANDEAL, April 12th. Although no absolute confirma tion is possible, it is believed in wellinformed quarture that Mar- shal Chiang Kai Shek's offensive, which opened on Monday morning, has ended disastrously.
The Southern forces were forced back, and it is even possible that they have lost Hsuchow-fu, the Nationalist beadquarters at the frout
Meanwhile, intrigue is rampant in. Nanking, notably arising out of the question of reparations in the settlement negotiated with Me MacMurray, the United States Minister, in which connection it is believed that Mr. T. V. Soong may shortly be forced out of the Finance Ministry,
The forthcoming departure of Marshal Li Tsai Hsin for Canton is also significant of the lack of unity amongst the Nationalists.
